Original Haze

greetings,
i was wondering if the community is familiar with a poster
made in 1975 called the original haze? it was copy written
in '75 by RL.
if anyone else happens to have one i'd love to hear from you.

back in those days i was an apprentice to an old master, now
i'm old, and no master, but still old.

the poster includes the story and recipe, and since i'm a med patient
now and able to engage in the production of my own medicine i have
engaged in gardening and am seeking out others who may have been around then.

peace from the monterey bay

Yeah, I forgot you can't send or receive pms yet. I think you need 25 posts to be able to use private messages. Ummm, I'll send him a pm to see if he'll help you out.

BTW- you say the poster had the story and the recipe? So what does that mean? Are you looking for a soil recipe or perhaps the genetic makeup of the Original Haze?

the poster is a beautiful color graphic not very large which contains the astrological
signs around it along with some great artwork and the story of how to grow the magic
herb. The title to the poster is Original Haze. At that time i was apprenticed to an old
timer her grew what was then called the original haze. the soil mixture is laid out
in the poster along with auspicious times to plant. we planted in large holes in the ground
filled with the soil that we cooked. the space was under glass and as i said earlier was
grown from may to the harvest moon in mid december. the flower ranged from purple to magenta to silver. the leaves were not purple only the calyxes, or pistals as we called them then.
at that time we had a significant supply of very strong thai sticks so i will use them as a comparison in terms of describing the effect. the sticks made you sit or sleep, they were narcotic, the haze made you the happiest person on earth. maybe it was my youth but i have yet to sample anything today that is better. different, incredible and very strong i have seen available in todays remarkable strains. ( i am on my fourth medical grow)
But to say they are better than the original haze i am not prepared to acknowledge.
The effect was spectacular in terms of it's creative impact, i remember it being the source of immense laughter and joy. likely just fond memories. after years of raising it
i moved on to family life and a job and had to find my medicine on the open market from people that subscribed to the same methods but the strain after years died out to the best of my knowledge. the beans were treasured but after awhile they produced thinner and thinner flowers, and i was not privy to the breeding stock but was allocated the beans each year and forbidden from making any, that was part of the deal which i always respected. one thing about the haze that made it so special was it's taste, it was like candy.
i would love to hear from anyone that knows the history or has the poster as i do.
peace
currently entering the fifth week of flowering my medical garden
blue cheese, chem dog, blue dream, candy purple, romulan, mazar, hash berry,
shiva skunk, hash plant, grape ape. i figure to keep trying every new strain until
i hit the taste jackpot. my last grew produced some trainwreck that was very tasty!

i would love to know more about the genetic makeup, i understand it to be a sativa
but that is all i know about it, other than things i've read here which seem to indicate that it originates in asia, but please tell me more.
thanks,

happyhi, thanks so much for posting! I love hearing about those early Original Haze days.

Sam_Skunkman has posted some info about Original Haze, check out this thread: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=82182

Here's some things he has posted:

Sam_Skunkman said:
"sam can u describe the ohaze smell n taste?"

Fruity, Sweet & Sour, Rootbeer, Cola, Chocolate, very /resinous hashy smell and taste.

have I not worked Original Haze as much as tried to save it, I collected as much seed as I could in the early 70's grew them and did free pollinations and did minimal selection to ensure I saved as many genes as I could. That was in the 70's & 80's now I have clones for the last 20 years. My O Haze is not done being worked on that is why I tell people to use it as breeding materials.
-SamS
////
To me the best was Original Haze. Everytime I smoked the best Original Haze I would get a rush, flashing stars, and my blood sugar would lower, my blood presure would seem lower, and I would feel a bit sweaty. And I mean every time, even after smoking it for days, weeks, months.
I had a friend that used to smoke bongs of OHaze with me and he would smoke a bong and just fall over, passed out. Wish I still had that clone...

Original Haze is the name given to a Hybrid variety developed from Columbian And Mexican with Thai and South Indian added later. It was not real consistant, but the best were in my opinion the best Cannabis I have ever seen. Pure Sativa, with a taste, smell, and high above all others.
Nowadays you see many non-Sativa hybrids that are called Haze, but they are not the same. They can be good but not as good as the Original Haze.
And no you can not just get Sativas hybridize them and call the progeny Haze. Anymore then I can build a car from scratch and call it a FORD.

You are a good dude! What comes around goes around... and around... and eventually it sometimes will land right in Gypsy's lap!

I got some Original Haze x Skunk#1 seeds from Seedbay/Seedboutiqe (the online outlets of Gypsy Nirvana, who also runs these boards) that were made by SamS, just quickdried and smoked my first taste of 2 of them today, it's spicy like nutmeg or mace with a hit of sweetness in each, my head started moving full tilt after smoking it, got a bunch of stuff done today.. just smoked some more of the other and now I'm beaming :biglaugh: really early but the stuff seems great!

I'd be really interested to hear anything else you might care to share from those days and about the Haze and that whole scene happyhi!

Would you mind telling us where you were if it's not too much of a security issue?

Do you know how your growing buddy got the seeds? Was he friends with the Haze Brothers or were seeds up for sale back at this time?

Do you remember the exact years you grew them out?

Someone posted the Haze Bros soil mixture on here a while back, I'll try to dig it up.

great to see the interest! i don't know how you guys work the computer so well to insert the quotes but it's cool.
the story, i know nothing about the haze brothers, other than a couple of brothers that liked
to get all that i had and call themselves that, i doubt it's the same brothers. as i posted earlier, monterey bay, which is specific enough but at the same time general as it's a large bay. i am hesitant to post the poster, and i don't really know how but i'm sure someone can help me take a good photo and post it, it is really cool and i'm surprised that it has not been posted before. it is copywritten and i respect people's work and will therefore not post a copy of it.

as to what it says, i have no problem with, here it is.

It is titled the " Cosmic Boogie - 1976, the copywrite is '75 by RL and the story ends with
"In Nature We Trust Spirit of '76"

The graphics include a color blend from blue to magenta to purple with the astrological
signs positioned around the art work which is the top half and includes,
" Original Haze" Connoisseurs Choice Cultivated California Cannabis" " Organically Grown"
" In Joy" " Honest Weight" "no seeds no chemical" and other very cool artwork including lots of cannabis art work.

here is what the poster says:
In clandestine locations sparsely scattered throughout California a few dedicated farmers cultivate the herb cannabis as a way of life. Anyone can grow weeds and see the virgin
greens, but to cultivate the exotic queens beyond your dreams you should have dedication, sensitivity to plant life, consistency, a little basic knowledge, Good Karma, and a great desire to find harmony with Mama Nature.
The basis for any strong, healthy plant is the soil it grows in. Resin producing herbs grow best in soil that is neutral to semi sweet. The larger the bush or tree, whatever it may be, the larger the root structure needed to support it.
Roots develop most freely in a loose rich soil. Mix one yard of soil compost of 30% mushroom compost, 30% redwood sawdust, 40% sandy loam topsoil. Mix organic nutrients: three pounds of hoof and horn meal, five pounds of rock phosphate, four pounds of kelp, one pound natural compost, one pound soil iron, five pounds of gypsum, and five pounds of dolomite.
Mix soil and minerals thoroughly and let sit for at least one week, then check the soil with a soil testing kit for Ph and add agricultural lime to bring the ph to 7.5 - 8.5 range, semi sweet for the connoisseurs' treat.
Spring arrives, and with it comes new life, fresh spirit, and great hope for the new crop. Plant your favorite seeds on the 6th or 7th of April, the moon is in Cancer, best sign for planting above ground herbs. In may, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th are good. If you're still not together, try June 8th and 9th while the moon is in Scorpio.
When you irrigate, make sure that the moon is in one of these signs when possible: Cancer is the most excellent time to irrigate, Taurus, Scorpio, and Pisces are also good for irrigation. Pruning should be done only in the third quarter.
Patience is the REAL secret and the true test. Try to make it until December 10th or 11th, when the moon is in Leo and harvest conditions are perfect. So, if you can dig it.......
In Nature We Trust Spirit of '76

Well there you have it, not my words, but words that i lived by when i was privileged enough to get to grow it under the guidance of a master.

peace

Hey happyhi I think it's fine to post a photo of the poster, as long as you don't make posters and sell them you should be ok. Got any more Haze stories? Ever go to a party and produce a joint for some novices? What was harvest like? Ever go to any harvest festival? etc..

hi bb
thanks for the heads up on the poster, i will think on it. in those days things were kept
low key, so no festivals. lots of private festivals thou. in those days the haze was so
special that every bit was spoken for before it ever got out of the ground.
what is most interesting is that i have heard from no one else that has the poster
or has mentioned ever seeing it.
The poster is very cool and i would like to share it so i will figure out how.
The words i posted earlier are exactly what the poster says verbatim.

ps to BB many thanks for the skunkman quotes, i don't know how to work the system
very well and really appreciate your effort. the quotes are right on the money and
i find it remarkable that he also feels as i do that despite the overall killer quality of
the plants available today they don't do it like the haze did.
skunkman has never responded to my inquiries so thanks for the info. if you are
ever in the monterey bay area i'd be happy to show you the poster.

Hey happyhi thanks for your thoughts and the offer is very kind, I have family up that way so maybe someday. I think that somebody on the boards at least saw the poster, like GreenintheThumb mentioned, because the Haze soil recipe sounds familiar. I'm sure SamS is pretty busy, I think you need a certain amount of posts to use the personal messages anyways (maybe 75 posts?), I have to imagine hed be interested in chatting with someone from those days though. I think those times in that area with the Original Haze was one of the most momentous points in the entire history of cannabis cultivation. So, as usual, any thoughts or memories of the Original Haze scene you have are appreciated.

Here is some of the Skunkman Original Haze x Skunk#1 that I just quickdried:

Leathery musky spicy aromas, delicious, frosty, and a great long lasting motivated high. I like it a lot and it's not even cured!

hey bb, thanks for your interest. in the days of the haze, there was haze and everything else. the haze produced an effect that can best be described as the smiling effect.
a day of the haze was often met with a jaw ache from so much smiling. one of the added bonuses was that you not only got the munchies but you often felt like it was the first time you ever ate. food never tasted as good as it did after a day of the haze!
still searching for that combination of taste and effect. todays strains are kick ass but seem to lack that special effect we all loved about the haze. much of todays med's are
couch lock, instead of upbeat and motivational. i was never as creative or care free,
maybe it was my youth, but i still think the haze had a very special effect. Maybe it was because the plant spent 8 to 9 months growing which gave it the time needed to develop. that is only a guess on my part. i am a newbie to this new method but am
having a blast producing my own meds instead of getting them from someone else.
hopefully i will find that special strain i am looking for.
one other thing about the construction of the haze, it was a wispy flower, primarily made up of calyxes but not dense like todays nug's. your flower looks a bit wispy like the haze did but since it is a photo i have no idea if that is the case. it may have been because we did not have the option of the kind of light that grow rooms produce and being on the coast had many foggy days. the fact that the flower was wispy did not in any way detract from it's power, taste and fragrance. The silver/magenta variety had the best taste, kinda like smoking a pack of juicy fruit.
all the best, peace, hh

thanks for the interest. one way or another i will figure out how to share the poster.
the artwork is extremely cool along with the whole story. i'm amazed that no one has
talked about it to date.
hopefully i will learn more from one of the old masters that is still around but no longer
producing. he was the main man at the time and i was forbidden from speaking with him about it back then. things were different. he now seems, after 35 years willing to talk about it so i will report back.

That was a very interesting read...I'd love to see that poster,it's a piece of history and probably quite rare as well. SamS was/is close friends of the H bros and he gave them some of the strains Haze was made from so what he posts about this subject is from the horse's mouth so to speak. He would probably remember the posters and maybe your mentor also, but isn't around on the site much at the moment(probably due to the amount of hassle he gets from jealous wannabe's in the biz. Thanx 4 posting....JBo
