Hello everyone. I am trying to throw together a container mix to run outdoors this summer. In the past my herb hasn't been too great. No flavor and low potency. Any help with this soil recipe would be much appreciated. I am open to all comments, criticisms, and suggestions.

The base:
  • Sphagnum: 50%
  • Aeration: 30%
  • Compost: 20%
To each CF, add:
  • .5 c calcium carbonate (oyster, crustacean, ag lime)
  • 1 c basalt
  • .5 c glacial
  • 1 c gypsum
  • 1/4 c potassium sulfate
  • 1/4 c calcium bentonite
  • 1/8 c azomite
  • .5c alfalfa
  • .5 c fish bone meal
  • .5 c fish meal
  • .5 c feather meal
  • .5 c frass

Welcome to ICmag!!

I am just curious where you got this recipe? Did you create it yourself? Without getting a soil test in your soil, it is hard to tell you how much of what to add or make suggestions to make the recipe work. However there are a couple recipes people use that when mixed with quality compost give good results with zero worries. That might be the easier option.

If you use tap water you will have problems with the nutrients releasing in the long run. You need an acidic water that will release the nutrients and allow the roots to get what they need. Acid or hydrogen molecules will bubble the nutrients in your list of ingredients and make them available. Tap water will not do it, and the result will be buds without smell . Another bad thing about tap, is that it will leave behind trash when the plant uses up the water, and over time it can lock out good nutrients by robing the receptor sites. 😎.
