I have been hearing bits and pieces about an "Orange Shirt Holiday" in the Netherlands. When is it? And what is it?
Like we need another reason to party?
Be smoking orange bud in my orange pipe!!woohooo
:friends:
April 30th is Queen's Day.One of the biggest and most popular national holidays in Holland. In Amsterdam in particular it's an excuse for a huge extended party as millions take to the streets to celebrate the birthday of Queen Juliana. The orange is the royal colors. I'll be there.
The Queens Day party started as a party for the Queen's Birthday and a chance to sell your shit in your front yard or on the street and not pay taxes.
Now I see its anyone selling anything and overpriced food and drinks.
It is still a killer party from midnight on.
I like to watch the preparations as every shop or business chains up piles of kegs outside their shops in anticipation of the easy profits from the drunken hoards.
Amsterdammers leave A-Dam on Queens Day if they don't like crowded chaos.
Imagine 3 milllion people drinking hundreds of thousands of kegs of beer and only 30 public bathrooms.
Gypsy, will you be buying kegs for Queens Day?
I'll help ya pump em.
I have a very loud Orange Aloha Shirt I will proudly wear.
............maybe he'll give out free bongs of Cali Orange instead!
I remember at Gypsy's shop in Am'dam he pulled out a 4 or 5 inch bud that someone gave him ..he said smell this with a "I bet you aint smelled anything like this before" look on his face. It smelled like the most concentrated and piercing orange and orange rind scent..i can still recall the pungent tang.
I was in Amsterdam in the mid 90's for Konnigsdaag....it was my first time in Am'dam, first time in Euro land..I knew it was a public holiday, but I didn't know the whole city was going to be pumping .....I walked out of the main train station and couldn't believe my eyes..there were 3 stages of rock bands within sight, the place was packed with young people streaming into the the city with that pre-concert "I'm gonna have a great time today" look on their faces... there was a real energy and anticipation in the air..I turned to my g/f and said " wow!, I knew was AM'dam was a place fun, but I didn't know it was this happening!"...out of the centre, in the residential areas around vondel park it was quite quaint with yuppie Dutch families walking along the streets buying knick knacks and take away food as well as lots of Orange coloured things....in the city centre it was less quaint with the crowds, drunks, the pounding techno blasting from loud speakers and green looking Skunked up English lads vomiting Heinekin into canals..but it was all good....lol I thought it was like this everyday!..it's the one day of the year where it seems the local Dutch out number the tourismos!
in the centre of town - it goes mental!.....book a room before you go!..if not go to the tourist office (used to be just outside the train station on the left) they will help you get a room in the outskirts of the city.
