Onyx Transpanting Question

Hey guys,
So I did a run before of onyx but have only gotten males. I got a ten pack and have germed 4, 4 popped all males. I'm hoping to pop what I have left sometime soon. My question is should I start small then work my way up? Or would it be okay to put it in a 3 gal pot right away? In my first grow I started in 16oz cups then transplanted but I feel that they got stunted or something because my RRF's only yielded about 12 grams or so. I'm using a 150w HPS, FFoF soil, Tea when needed.

So should I pop them and put them in 16 oz cups like I did before and transplant them into 3 gal pots? Or can I just go ahead and plant them in the 3 gals right away allowing them to grow for roots.

From what I can tell (referring to 20/4's onyx plant) it seems that onyx can yield up to an ounce or more! I want to try to maybe lst? or even scrog? I was reading some stuff about scrog but it seems confusing, do I just guide the tops into the squares?

Also, I was looking at some of the other threads on here, it seems that people like to pluck some of the fan leaves off, almost trimming it allowing more light to hit the buds. Do you guys think this is a good idea for autoflowers? I know that fan leaves are important for light and they contain stuff thats good for the plant, haha. If I were to go about plucking some of the leaves what should I pluck?

Thanks for all the help guys, just trying to get some insights from other autoflower growers. From what I can tell these things are great, and some of the growers on here can make MONSTERS out of them. Props to them guys.

Oh did I mention, the next grow is gonna be solely from BHO? I've never ran anything more than about a half an o, so running a big quantity would be great!

For me i start my autos in 1/2 gals and depending on the strain i decide what pot is best, from what im seeing from the sour60 its not QUANTITY as much as it is pot height... and giving the roots more depth... With the s60s i started them in jiffys then into 1/2 gals, then as you can see in my thread i stacked the .5 gals on top of 1 gallons and the sour60 LOVE IT, they are over 30 inches tall...im gonna run my onyx this way next time around and see if i get more improvements, the onyx didnt even use ALL 3 gallons of soil i had given it... I dont think im gonna use more than 2 gals of soil for autos ever again,,,but just my 2 cents, good luck sir!

Thanks for the reply 20/4, your onyx's came out awesome. Pretty much just what I'm looking for, do you think stacking like 1 gallons would be better for onyx. I hear that auto's honestly do like the pot height rather than like width. I'm going to dry to get some of those bags like you got, where did you grab them? Local home depot?

Honestly i cant say 100% if the onyx will improve with pot stacking, i can only go by what i see with the s60s compared to onyx, which really isnt accurate since they are diff strains... I would try both if i were you, to get a feel for things and see what works best for you... AFs deff like more pot height... Im pretty sure homedepot doesnt have the grow bags, maybe a local grow shop? If not you can always find them online of all diff shape sizes and prices!:dance013:

Word thanks 20/4, cant wait to get my cab back up and going after some hiccups. My first grow the vents that lead to the exhaust tore and I didnt even realize it till it was too late. My first plant was all good because it was a bit older than my second plant which was the one that suffered the most. But these were different strains, RRF. But I had them in way bigger pots then recommended, 2 gal Air pots they still seem kinda stunted.
Onyx I've had pretty much bad luck with the male/female ratio. I'm hoping that the last couple beans that I have are female.

I was just wondering man, have you read up at all in trimming plants? I've read some posts on here that say its beneficial because it allows more light to get to the buds. Your opinion?

Also, I'm letting you know that my grow space is a mini fridge! I'm running the same light you are pretty sure, HTG 150w HPS, right? Cant go wrong with it haha. I'm hoping to maybe Scrog them, you probably have checked out the autoflower bud shots and one of the guys had huge yields with autoflower hybrids petty sure, and it looked like he used scrog. His name his Muskrator, he actually posted on the same page with your bud shots. But since I am growing in a mini fridge my height is somewhat limited so scrog or lst would be best.

Thanks for stoppin by man

I also had bad male to female ratio with onyx, i only had 2 females that made it to the end....

As far as trimming with onyx, ive heard diff opinions on trimming, i myself do not trim healthy leaves, instead i very carefully "tuck" the leaves under other leaves so the colas can get direct light...Alot of the undershaded bud can be lit up my simply tucking the fan leaves... Ive seen the posts made by muskrator, very impressive autos i must say, I myself am doing a little bit of lst with a couple sour60 this time around, already i can see many benefits, so honestly if i were you i would FORSURE do lst in such a small cab, i ALREADY regret not doing LST on all of my s60s... because of some of there height... 32 inches! Havent done scrog myself, LST just seemed easier for me, i use pipe cleaners, and make sure not to tie them tight around the stems! Good luck cant wait to see your cab...

P.s I love my htg 150:wave::jump:

Good info 20/4 - 2 gallons of soil seems like a sufficient cap for Autos

I have been collecting a gang of 32oz Drink cups from Fast food joints and gas stations etc.
Currently have 5 Lr2's in 16oz Beer cups @ 2 weeks, Was going to wait for sex and then transplant the females, But I may jump the gun on all of 'em....

I am confident these 32oz Cups will perform very well, given their unique height and skinny shape. In my mind, I am more interested in planting larger numbers of seeds/phenotypes; rather than growing them to their fullest yielding potential. Of course though, with the least amount of root restriction and greatest amount of space utilized.

Fc - As far as leaf trimming, I have learned that autoflower strains won't always drop their leaves on their own after they are done being used. Pruning is usually a lot to do wiht personal preference, but I would say remove any leaves that have been yellowing and may be blocking light from reaching the inside of the bud or other more green leaves beneath.

I also currently have a 400W dwc Scrog system going that I have been practicing moderate defoliation on, I can contest that it has had a tremendous effect on the wealth of my buds!

The End, Glad to see your post. From what it sounds like it seems like your almost going for like a SoG? High number of plants, instead of having low numbers and pushing them to their fullest. I was thinking that I should do a run of SoG with what I have left, which is 6 seeds of Russian Rocket Fuel and 6 seeds of Onyx. I was thinking about it but from what it seems, onyx seems to be optimum when it has bigger pot space. So kind of trashed the SoG idea. But I gotta agree with you going with the number of plants definitely is an alternative. The 2 females that I had in my first grow,I prayed that they would be big, but they ended up being not as big as I thought. But I did have some minor issues that may have had played a role in not yielding that much.
RRF sounds like a good candidate for SoG, says that it does very well in 1 gal pots, so could probably try to use like a 2L bottle or something.

I'm hoping to get my cab back up and running. My first run in my opinion was kind of a joke and I want to buckle down and get this right :). Its too much of an addicting thing, I see other people that grow their awesome bud, and I have the same seeds..... Can't wait to pop some of the onyx beans, really hoping to get some females. The males that I had were so healthy in their 16 oz cups, but unfortunately I put them outside, but they died because of the weather (was way to cold, rained for like 2 weeks straight.).

Is there any key secrets to scrogging a autoflower? Since their growth is so rapid, I wonder if they would fill the screen evenly. I think that I read somewhere when I searched that your supposed to wrap the tops around the sqares? Is that even right? Sounds pretty confusing, I thought that you just fitted each node to a square?

Any help here is great guys, even some talk about your past opinions on scrogging and cutting off some leaves!

Hey dude, if you ain't working with a large number of plants, LST is simpler, especially if ur gonna get a variety of different phenos that don't match in height. LST can control each plant precisely, and you can be sure all plants are being decently trained.
Another important point to think of is that scrog will entangle all the plants together, not useful if you like to rotate and move plants around the cab. Not to mention it makes watering a pain in the ass.

I start my plants in 2L bottles (top cut off) and transplant them when they sex (as soon as they do, not when flowering fully onsets). Depending on how big the plant got before it sexed, you might have to start LST before transplant. Not a problem though, LST is really easy.

Thanks for the reply cyber, so your saying that LST would be better than Scrog because it provides a more individual training, rather than having the plants all try to get as tall as the Scrog then going from there. I think I am gonna LST, should provide almost the same results if scrogged correct?

Have any thought on modular scrogging guys? Since cyber made me think that it would be better if each plant had its own scrog screen instead of trying to get each plant to get to the height of whole scrog screen. Has anyone tried modular scrogs with autos? Just thinking off the top of my head with the modular thing.

For LST, I've seen a couple threads, but those are all for regular non autoflowers, they have time to grow them the way the want. Since us autoflowers kind of switch on us to flowering, should I just kind of try to go around the pot? I think I'm going to try to grab some tree pots or grow bags, so it would be kind of hard to LST, which would be the best way to go about it?

I know what your saying about the scrog and watering, after my first grow my friend asked if he could use my cab for some clones he had, we decided to scrog since the head room just isn't there in the cab, the watering became a huge bitch so we just put towels and watered and left them in the fridge.

So for LST would you try to train the plant to grow kind of in a circular motion over the pot? Kind of like clockwise or something? Or just to tie each branch down so that it gets an even distribution of light. Thats whats always confused me about LST.

Thanks guys, really appreciate any input thats involved in this thread.

Any pot would be easy to do LST in. Drive screws into the pot from above along the perimeter. Start with 4, one on each side, then another 4 in between the previous 4. You'll have a totaly of 8 around the pot. You can easily tie the plant down now using thick but soft hemp rope.

Your eventual goal is to drive the plant around the pot along the screws, but the first stage is to get it to get horizontal, slowly. First tie the base of the plant to the nearest screw and secure the knot, don't make it too tight, this is just to support the plant. Then use the opposing screw to bring the plant down to make it horizontal, do this slowly over a day or two, bringing the plant down a notch every few hours. After that keep working your way around the pot as the main strem grows, keeping the main stem horizontal so that all internode shoots grow like colas.
It's really simple and straightforward once you get down to it.

yeah thought you would go around the pot like you said cyber. When would you suggest to start LST'ing with autoflowers? I would like to try to start LST'ing as soon as the plants can. Would like to hear your opinions guys.

Thanks for the posts so far, love the responses.

As soon as ya can, man.

Even if it only has it's first set of leaves you can still pull 'er over sideways.
LST is nothing to fear!

Somethings I do, is manually bend the plants back and fourth, blowing them over, gently pinching and bending the stem in each direction. Really helps to form a very sturdy stem, and keep you in close relation with the little buggers.

yeah, Ive seen that when you bend them over, it looks like they kind of snapped but when it grows back its like a hard little knob, pretty damn neat to say so the least. Alright well if I can start it at the beginning that would be great. Thanks for the help guys, any advice and opinion post up!

my advice is bang the onyx in hydro and 250 watt hps you will get upto 5 oz dry no lst or fuking about needed just a straight grow :)

ive seen numerous amounts of people achieving this around the net and i will be doing it myself next round alongside sour 60s (the new batch ) in a grow off styleeee

peace

I would run a hyrdo Skotty, but I feel that I want to get a couple soil runs down before I hop over to Hydro, and also hydro makes MONSTER plants which is awesome but for a mini refrigerator its not that great. I dont even wanna imagine what would happen if the plants were too big for the mini fridge. Thats why I was thinking Scrog or LST because I'll be able to control them a bit more than just regular growing when they're grow like monsters. Also for Hydro, I dont think I would have enough height in the cab, its like almost 3 ft? So if there isn't much space for a reservoir and bubbler setup or such.

JW, what do you guys think is the best hydro method for a small enclosed space?
