Hi there i am trying to germ some very old seeds.

Golden leaf , nederzaad 2005 and nederzaad 2006.

Up to now only 2 out of twenty have cracked in 10 days.

The seeds are in a glass of water in my 25 degrees celsius propagator.

There is some white slime forming on some of the seeds even though i change the water every day.

How can i prevent this 'white slime"???

btw those golden leaf are old positronics seeds and it would break my heart if i lost them , wanted to reproduce them :(

I also germinate in water and I add some H2O2(peroxide) to the water and I never have slime problems. I use a vitamin bottle and use about a capful of h202.

Germinating seeds in water only sometimes works. You dont wanna dampen off the seeds. Try biting or cutting the pointy end of the seed at the very tip. Plant and water and watch you seed grow. The pointy end of a seed is where the taproot shoots off from.

ok i will try this biting the tips off with the seeds that are in the glas cups for 10 days and the waterperoxide for the next seedlings

Thx 4 the tips guys.

Damn just looked at my seed collection , only 4 golden leafs left. Damn i really wanna save this strain but they won't bloody germ. They are i think 10-13 years old

around the seed is a protective coating.....so scuff 'm before you pop them into water....how to scuff...take a piece of sandpaper and rub it against the seed where it supposed to crack....you might see the coating fall off ......and scuff the back of the seed too...also add a very small bit of hygrozyme to the water and if they a viable they should pop...

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have the seeds in water longer then 24 hours.
Because they can rot, A 24 hours soak then a medium.

THC123,

I hope this helps. I had seed that was 6-8 yrs old depending on the strain. Multiple companies, breeders. Some from Mns, ThSeeds, Sagmartha to name a few. The method I used I learned from a well respected breeder. Which I modified to my own use. I dropped many seed. Around 100 hoping to get some to pop. I hit almost 90%. I had way too many. So here is what I did I will try to make it exact.

The environment needs to be humid for the first part of plants life. Medium damp...Then when plants has say 2nd set. Back off of the humidity, also let media start to dry out. If you have a seed heat mat, and humidity dome. That will help to recreate this quite well.

1. I soak the seeds in Ro water. Tap should be fine here also...With a slight 2-5% bleach solution. 12 hours, and then plant direct into medium sprouted or not.

2. The medium should be kept warm (heat mat), and (humidity dome) if possible. If you dont have a dome. Make one somehow. It makes a difference. Make sure to vent it, and exchange air occasionally.

3. When I water the medium right from the start. I use a product called superthrive. Tho' if you have access to Liquid Karma that works great also.

That is basically it. I am sure I left something out. Just a lil tired right now. If you need any other help. I will do my best. Also try to pre-soak the medium it helps..peace..
