I have some soil from a previous grow that I would like to reuse. Its FF Ocean Forest with some perlite in it. I havent used it for a few months and its bone dry.
Should I go buy a new bag of FF for my new grow, or shouldn't I?
it depends. If you going to replace what has been used up out of it from a bottle you may be ok to reuse, but without that, you're far better throwing it out. If re-using, try to get as much of the root mass out of the soil first.
read the post by 3lb. on Organic Soil. And just think. Does a farmer scape and dispose of his top soil every year? Here is the address. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=34060
Read this and judge for yourself. I'am thinking of trying this with a few plants on my next run. I have some soil (Fox Farm OF) the same as you do. I will just add the missing admendments and let it cook for about a month. I have been studying this alot lately and since I came from a farmer family for generations, I think it will work great.
id say theres a bit of a difference between a farmer out in the feild and u indoors with potted soil , but think u could work th at out .... i think youll find he amends his soil each time prior to growing , and u know they even seem to be using mulch these days ...

High Mate,
I tried to re-use a very similer mix last year,it sort of worked but i was undsatisified with it after a coupl of weeks,so much so i ripped the strugglers out and started again wiht new soil, the batch i planted virtually jumped out the gorund thaty grew so well!
I reuse my soilless mixes and coco, but I use all organic amendments and ferts. As soon as I harvest I pull all the roots out or as much as I can, remix amendments, add more perlite if needed, and let it sit for 3-4 weeks. It's as good as new IME. I make my own mixes though I don't buy bagged soil. I usually use coco w/ perlite and compost or peat w/ perlite and compost with blood, bone, kelp meals. It works well for me.
In my perpetual harvest garden I have been remixing FFOF for the last two years with the following amendments:
10 gallon remix
1.5 cups alfalfa meal
.5 cup bone meal
.5 cup kelp meal
1 cup dolomite lime
add. Perlite
Roots are removed before the used soil is remixed. After the amendments are mixed in I place the soil in a tub, add water and close the the top. This mix sits for at least a month. Soil is Mixed a couple more times during the month and more water is added.
This mix has been working very well in a perpetual harvest garden that has a harvest every two weeks for the last two years. The big bonus, besides great plant growth and not having to keep buying more and more bags of soil, is not having to get rid of all that used soil!
I have, and do recycle my dirt, and is is an Ocean Forrest/CocoGro'. I do always run it through the screen and get all the root out of it that i possibly can. It then gos back into the hopper. with fresh Ocean Forrest; with that is Seabird Guano, Blue ridge earthworm castings, FF bigf n chunky (as needed to refresh), and I mist it moist with Age Old Kelp, mixed half strength, andi keepit moist in a 48quaart storage plastic tub It just makes it go farther, the soil, plus i have to drive 'bout an hour to get the FFOF, and you all know its great soil, but its at a price too, for what it is.
Peace
i am growing in pots and buckets and whatnot this season but i am planning on re-using the dirt in rasied beds for next season.
the area i live was strip mined a couple or three decades ago and once you dig down about 6-8 inches its all clay. i figure i'll dig down as far as i can and build the beds and fill uip the soil and ad some compost material and maybe even some worms then cover it all up for the winter and see what i get. at the worst, i will get a good soil mix that i can use to add to other soil mixes and peat moss, etc. for other raised beds and possibly some other container grows.
i figure with a good winter of snow and rain, etc, the old stuff should decompose a little and leach out a lot of the chemicals. why not re-use it... recycle, recycle, recycle.
Ya know what...I'm RIGHT NOW using recycled soil...broke loose and REMIXED w/ferts like new soil...NOT THE slightest indication of ANY problems...matter of fact this grow's looking EXTREMELY good...probably wont reuse it again tho...once back thru saves a TON of soil and work..

I have about 20 gallons of left over dirt I was goin to use to start up some seedlings....I was wondering the same thing. I am just worried about bugs n stuff. So I might throw it in a oven or microwave for a bit...is that crazy????? I just dont see why I should throw all that soil out...
I dont know about you folks, but for maybe 60 bucks 3 bags of ocean forest I'll make thousands of dollars but I'm a bad boy.I guess if your not really profiting you can do shit like that but man it makes no sense to me.
If ur on a tight budget you can reuse old soil by composting it or baking it in an oven for a few hours and the putting the amendments back in the soil using organic additives like bone meal, blood meal, green sand ,wood ash, lime, gaunos, but you must bake it before you add the additives to get a useful soil. Reusing soil to many times causes it to become depleted of nutes and builds up salts and becomes toxic. Plus you dont want any pest or non benefical bacteria or fungi to ruin ur crop.
