OK I screwed up...now what? | Improper Sexing

Hi,
For some reason I had it in my mind that to sex a plant you could just put it under 12/12 and as soon as it showed the first sign of sex you could pull it out and put it back in veg...

I had some Skunk #1, Big Bud (Sensi Seeds) and some Durban Poison, and some Pollen Chuck that I did this to. They vegged for a month then into 12/12 for two weeks...i dont think any of them took longer than that to show sign...

once I got the confirmation (using jewelers loupe) I pulled them out and want to make clones off of them to flower...keeping the original plant in constant veg...for cloning..

if these are real females they should not herm correct? or should I just put them all back in flower and see what happens...once they flower and keep to one sex I could reveg them then and make a clone mum out of them..

thanks for any help!

regards

you're all good. as soon as you can sex the plant and determine it to be a female, put the original back in veg with 24 hours of light until new growth starts showing, then drop to 18/6. the clones will be all good too, just get roots on them and throw them into veg too.

in your title you said improper sexing but you never mentioned it above. what makes you think that the plants you thought were female are actually male?

That was truly the slower method to use for sexing them though... the plant's growth will suffer in the beginning when flipping back to veg due to the hormone changes.

A better method is to simply take the clones while she's in veg and 12/12 the clones, not the mother...

Hi,
Thanks again for the comments...

jd-the improper method was:

"put it under 12/12 and as soon as it showed the first sign of sex you could pull it out and put it back in veg..."..

some other members said this was not the way to do it at all and it probably would cause hermitization (is that a word?) anyway...it makes sense to take some cuttings but for me it takes so much longer to get roots...next time around I will take a copy and make it bloom...

jd-what makes you think that the plants you thought were female are actually male?---i never did think they were male...originally I just wanted to determine the sex...after i took them out of 12/12 and back into veg...i was told they would just go hermie..

somebody said on another thread that they just take a copy, put it in a glass of water for two weeks...

i did not think the plant could continue to grow without roots? I thought that if you put cutting in direct or too strong light the cutting would just wither away...

i do not put any cuttings under light until about two weeks then just indirect and increase from there..

is 18/6 enough light? I would love to cut back my electric meter is whirrring so loud the dog is howling!

thanks for your help...

my personal opinion is that the plant won't hermie on you with what you did. the best way to do it is as BudLove suggests. that's the way i've done it so far and haven't had any issues. i have heard of lots of people just putting their plant in 12/12 lighting to sex it and then switching it back to veg without the plant turning hermaphrodite. if you took a plant put it in flower and then back to veg and then flower again in a short amount of time, i guarantee you will stress the hell out of the plant and it will turn hermie. but what you're doing seems like it will take enough time to where that won;t happen. my guess is the person who is talking about taking a copy and sticking it in a glass of water for 2 weeks is talking about a cloning method referred to as water cloning. you can search this site, there's tons of articles on it. i haven't had to much success with water cloning, however. i put a cutting in a plain glass of water as suggested and it eventually rooted. it took around 25 days to have enough roots to go into soil. by the time the roots did form, the leaves were almost 100% dead. i still have the clone and it's been about 2 months or more now and the thing is about the size of what a 2 week old clone should look like. now that i think about it, i'm ditching it :) it's just a waste of space. i would definitely recommend going with a wick cloner or just some rapid rooters and rootech if you are new to cloning. you don;t want to much light on the clones, set it 2' away from a hid light. if using fluro's to clone, which is recommended, you can set them a few inches away. 18/6 is definitely enough light for veg. i'm pretty sure the plant only uses a maximum of 18 hours of light anyways. i clone under 18/6 too. when switching a plant from veg to flower, leaving it under 24 hour light for a few weeks would be the best measure. after 3-4 weeks of 24/0, cutting back to 18/6 will be fine. hope this helps.

Hi,
Jdubz-thanks bud...i should have edited that post about the cutting in a glass of water...it should have said...in a glass of water and then into 12/12 for 2 weeks...i did not know this would work...i thought roots were needed for further growth...

you are exactly right as is the others who responded...next time around I will definitely be sending in some marked clones and keep from stressing...

i think the trick here is that as soon as you can determine sex, yank it out of 12/12.....if you have the extra light you may could even slowly pull them back to 24/7 without much problems..

there is a ton of great folks and info on this site...

thanks for the feedback
