Deputies making sure doors are locked before criminals notice

TWINSBURG TOWNSHIP -- The Summit County Sheriff's Department is taking a proactive approach to law enforcement, warning neighbors about unlocked doors.
"Going with the old adage, an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure," says Deputy Mark Anspach. "If we can bring it to the attention to these businesses and residents that these problems exist, hopefully we can deter a criminal from taking advantage of them and making them a victim."

The deputies will leave a card at homes and businesses if no one is there, but they'll go in homes to make sure nothing is wrong if they find open doors, sometimes to the shock of residents.

"You get woke up in the middle of the night and somebody's walking around your house or flashing lights on you, it is scary," says Deputy Kirk DeStefano. "But, they feel more safe and secure that way than finding out it was someone trying to break into their house."

Deputies have found 412 unsecured doors on homes and business since January 1st.

The deputies are looking for unlocked doors primarily in Northfield Center, Twinsburg Township, Green, and Coventry.

Don't get caught up and if you live in Ohio you should DEFINITELY complain to your legislators.

They feel more safe and secure? Yeah right, their gonna be surprised when someones camping out with a shotgun out of self defense when they hear someone walking around in their house.

This is an accident waiting to happen.

This will last til the first cop gets shot by a homeowner.

If I woke up in the middle of the night with flashlights roaming around my house, I shoot first and ask questions later.

WTF are these clowns thinking?

OMFG WTF?!?!
leave people be, thats why the cops have a number, they are called to danger, they dont go looking for it in random peeps houses....does this mean people can do this as well? oh no wait, they are above the law and can enter any building for any reason....

you know i like the fact that they are checking people's doors. however, i don't agree with the entering part.. ring the damn bell.. or just lock it for them. why are they goin into people's homes and SEARCHING. it's obvious they're looking for something. but the real issue will come down to WHEN AND IF they do find something. what will they do? it's breaking and entering if you ask me. a crime. but police officers continually believe they are above the law and should get some sort reprieve when they do dirt. what's really sad is the justice system usually grants dirty officers the exact reprieve they need to do shit like this. sometimes the problem is much higher than the police.

unreasonable search and seizure?

even if they were to find 100 plants growing inside someones living room, it would never hold up in court..

sometimes I leave my door unlocked for a reason. Is that illegal? They should check all my guns too and make sure the safety is on so I dont hurt myself... and they could tie my shoelaces for me too. maybe mop the front hall while they're in there

damn somebody watched bowling for columbine and got pissed off.. Canadians just leave their doors unlocked and don't think twice (or so MM would have us believe)

anyway that's some total BS. the misses and I sleep naked alot and that would totally suck to have those nasty pigs walk in on ya naked, i might be tempted to fire off some rounds in em even after finding out who they were.....

i have to kind of agree with a lot of the negative sentiment but let me point out first that it IS a safety thing for people because it's usually those older people who forget to do simple shit like that. all my grandparents are dead but i wouldn't mind a cop doing a check.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT

walking in crosses the line! that's why i say for the cop's safety, they ought to RING THE DAMN BELL first to alert people. yes, there may be thieves in there but in any case, i'd say a homeowner has more right to pop a cop, or at least i would hope so.

the thing for me is that, there is some GOOD that can come from this BUT i think we all know what they are really trying to do.

the thing that bothers me the most is that they are trying to set themselves up for exactly that type of situation where they might end up killing, or being killed by, a homeowner/occupant.

the way i see this shit playing down in a court room is the lawyer for the "breaking and entering" police officer will try to argue that an opened door is cause for concern.. blah blah blah.......... PROBABLE CAUSE. yes it SOUNDS unlikely to some but i'd bet it sounds quite likely to many. with the judges giving passes to cops on a regular basis and potential jurors being ignorant dumbasses anyway, i would BET it's allowed to stand up in court.

if that stands up in court and that PRECEDENT IS SET, our freedoms are OUT the window because once a cop gets away with dirt, they're gonna just get dirtier. that means doors will be "FOUND UNLOCKED" and the premises will be entered upon which, "during a routine lock check we found drugs and drug paraphernalia...." and you get the idea.

i think the best bet for many of us IN THIS MARIJUANA COMMUNITY is to UPGRADE the locks on our doors, don't forget the keys if that's something you do, and so on.

policy like this will NOT get repealed until it gets to a point that a few people die or it goes to the Supreme Court where it may not even get struck down. just don't be the guinea pig in this experiment, ya know!?

Lock your doors ppl in OHIO, the world in amish country maybe safe but the rest of the world isnt. you'll never find my front door unlocked unless im right out side

FRANKENBLUNT420

me blunt is like, wicked yo!! owight
thats a buncha horseshit, there is no way your are gonna test my door and then think you can just walk into my home, cop or not, you gotta be crazy.

what if you do leave your door open or rather unlocked and there is no one there, can they still just "c'mon in"? these bastards are really doing their damndest to try and take away anyones right to true privacy.

if its about the elderly, then have your family member equipped with safe guards. ADT and other security firms have options for elderly homeowners. then there are life alert necklaces, bracelets and so much other stuff.

but having the cops just be able to " stroll on through" on a courtesy call? uh uh, fu*k that ,hell no, ain't gonna happen. and you know they keep track of certain people and they are gonna make sure they go to those peoples homes prayin' to god for the day they slip up and leave the door open. and you know damned well cops are some str8 lyin' cocksuckers. they would kill a nun and make it look like she was a uzi totin' cracked out meth head by the time the news vans roll around, because once again they screwed up. and her place would be LACED with crap!!! well i know the cops in the bronx would do it.

if anything have a list of people that are willing to "sign on" for that with their local police, but to give them the authority to do it? sorta like a wake up call, if you know you sometimes cant wake up, you get a wake up call service; if you know that sometimes you leave your shit unlocked, then YOU can have them comma a strollin' on in to your spot, but for it to be the rule as opposed to the exception. . . middle finger that one!!!

In the eyes of the law an open door is an invite to enter.

As for crime. Whats to stop me as a burglar dressing up as a cop and then just randomly wandering around under the guise of the pro-active approach. I could steal shitloads before you woke and even if you did you'd probably politely show me the door unless your one of the guntoting maniacs above! :)

Sounds like a good way to score some free arrests and opportinuties to fiscally penalise the populous.

I read stories like this and think it's just bs. What cop in his right mind is going to walk into a house knowing he could be LEGALLY killed by the owner.Pretty damn stupid.
