TWINSBURG TOWNSHIP -- The Summit County Sheriff's Department is taking a proactive approach to law enforcement, warning neighbors about unlocked doors.
"Going with the old adage, an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure," says Deputy Mark Anspach. "If we can bring it to the attention to these businesses and residents that these problems exist, hopefully we can deter a criminal from taking advantage of them and making them a victim."
The deputies will leave a card at homes and businesses if no one is there, but they'll go in homes to make sure nothing is wrong if they find open doors, sometimes to the shock of residents.
"You get woke up in the middle of the night and somebody's walking around your house or flashing lights on you, it is scary," says Deputy Kirk DeStefano. "But, they feel more safe and secure that way than finding out it was someone trying to break into their house."
Deputies have found 412 unsecured doors on homes and business since January 1st.
The deputies are looking for unlocked doors primarily in Northfield Center, Twinsburg Township, Green, and Coventry.
