odor control

i planted 3 bubblicious plants yesterday. i here they can smell a lil. well the last 3 gros i've done i used no odor control and this last time with my hps its stunk a lil with the plant i grew. i used insence. well i don't really wanna build a carbon scrubber and don't got the money for one and seems peeps got um for bigger gros not just 1 to 3 plants.but i seen these true air odor eliminator things u plug in to the wall they have carbon filters. kinda like the holmes odor eliminator.on ebay u get 2 of them new in box.and 10 filters. each one also comes with a filter .all for 35 bux including shipping.thats more my price range. well i bought it i figured it will work for 1 to 3 plants. i Lst my plants short also.. hope this helps and will let ya kno!!!! what do u guys think?

For $35 you could be well on your way to building a scrubber. Remember, you only get out what you put in...dont skimp.

If they dont smell to bad the small odor eliminater might work but I would spend a little more and get one of the bigger ones at home depot. Better yet, is their any way for you to install a fan with the vent going outside?

no thats the prob. see the closet i got it in i can't vent to the outside.i don't think i should go into the ceiling either. also i figured if i had 2 of them maybe actually one in the box and one right outside of it its would work because my last gro i had a stinky plant and noone that came in knew because i used insence. so i figured maybe 2 fem instead of 1 if i am lucky the odor removers would work? well i will find out. i also read to have a box of baking soda in there? hell i could try anything little thing like that. just don't want peeps askin what the hell that cylinder thing is on the side of my gro cab.i would of built a scrubber but i am not good at building stuff. everyone thinks its only peppers and tomatoes and the crap that i also gro in there.
well hope works. heres my last gro i just got last week or so. not bad except for nute burn.notice the short build from LST i keep um low and stuff. i am happy with a half oz of some sticky! its my 1st time that its not bagseed. i am excited lol

If you arent going to build a scrubber and are going to continue growing then I would invest in a larger room air filter that takes the carbon sheets. It will cost you 80 to a hundred dollars but they will do a good job on a few plants. Remember that the smell is the second biggest reason people get busted so it needs to be taken seriously....

You can make a real el cheapo carbon filter by layering bulk carbon between furnace filters & duct taping it together. Then use a small fan to blow through it & out of your cab. Try doing a search on this site for how to make one. I've seen them before, they're very simple.

Carbon Scrubber Bucket Tutorial

I came up with this idea with some ideas from Ticks freshener and the need to save some dollars.I started out by using a 4" blower flange to trace an outline on the bucket lid The hole was then cut with a razor knife ( BE CAREFul) The sealant was aplied to the surface of the flange that was to contact bucket lid and popped into place. After the sealant was dry I drilled hole where they existed already for flange and fasten with nuts and bolts. The bottom of the bucket was then drilled with a 1/4'' bit to resemble swiss cheese. ( this step could use larger bit say 3/8 or larger to increase flow) I used the bottom of the bucket to size the foam disk, then cut it out the Disk was then placed into the bucket and a layer of hi- loft batting was next. I then filled the bucket with 10 lbs of activated carbon and placed another layer of batting to fill remaining space in the bucket. Then I popped the lid onto the bucket and viola!

Lastly to test them, I hooked to wimpy 70 cfm bathroom fan.

I now have them hooked to 465cfm dayton cleaning my flowering room exhaust (8'x10') and doing a great job of it.

I do feel that inline fans would be more effective but used what I had on hand.

All in all I have under $100 usd in making these two and have enough materials to build smaller one for veg box.

Well thanks for the kudos Jebus but you are not the first to comment. This thread was remade specially to fit the"format"
I will try and give the best info I can.

Max room size is not known as this is my first attempt at a project of this nature.

I expect that they will last at least 6 months if not a year, just a guess at this point though

Thirdly:

2 "5 gallon" paint bucket with lid (already pictured)
2 4" flange for "dayton type blower
2 tubes of Dap silicone
1 yard 1/2" foam
1 bag HI-Loft batting
1 drill and 1/4" bit
1 razor knife
6 each screw,washer,nut
1 pink bunny ( for good luck)

this list doesnt include the 465cfm dayton blower that I had already.
The foam and batting can be bought at a fabric store, the carbon, can be bought at hydro store or aquarium supply online. Get virgin cocoa husk carbon, can be used for fish tank filters as well.
The flanges and fans from hydro store. The buckets, lids and silicone are from the hardware store.

I hope that helps.

GL this is what i'll build after i move :joint:

thanks guys!u r all a bunch of help.i apreciate all the response hopefully i can get through this gro with these filters i got till i can build a scubber.. i will let u kno if it works. i have had people tell me my temps were too high in my hps cab and it did fine i have also had peeps say u can't gro with shop lights which i also have done. so maybe these will work who knows? if not i will build the scrubber and next gro i am goin with northern lights x shiva as i heard someone say his plants didn't smell at all during flower. like i said i have small plants 2 feet tops. so i believe i can get through this. i will also add insence and a box of baking soda. also when flower comes around it will be may so windows will start to get open and fresh air will be in the room. i really think the carbon scrubber is the way to go also but i am not great at building crap. the only thing i ever built good was my gro cab lol. hell if it smells like bubble gum instead of stink like a skunk everything should be ok lol

hey man. i was in the same sitch as you a while ago. not wanting to put out the cash for a real good scrubber but i still needed something to mask the odor of 3 flowering plants in my tiny cab. i picked up one of those true air things that you plug in. (same as your im assuming but mine was 15bucks from walmatr) i got the idea from stoner on og and his seed project.he vouched they helped with smell and i can say that this thing helped alot. the only time when there was any smell was if i had the cab door open and later on in flowering towards the end of the day after lights were on for 10 or so hours when the cab heated up, there was a faint skunk smell but more just that plant/chlorophyl smell

thanks!! great to know bro!!! was it in the cab? i got 2 also plus 12 filters for 35 bux on ebay!!!! so it will work hopefully! great to kno u just made my day. at least i kno it aint 35 bux for nothing. what kind of seeds did u gro? i have bubblicious this time! its my 1st strain other than bagseed. i ahve 3 bagseed gros to my name 2 under shoplights. (airy nugs) once under 250 watt .my 1 plant was a half oz!!! and solid nugs not airy. well thanks for the info gro on my fellow oger and icmager!

One "Glade Plug In" in any electrical outlet in the same room as your cab will mask a hell of a lot of smell!!!

I'm going to second this opinion. I was in Walmart the other day and picked up a True Air odor remover air filter with activated carbon for only 15 bucks. I figured I'd give it a shot. I've got two stealth speaker boxes that are about 30" tall and 1 square foot each. About 130 watts CFL inside each and one plant in each. One of the plants is a real stinker, smells like it's got some skunk in it for sure. I'm in a situation where I need to be undetected and the odor problem was giving me serious problems.

After using the True Air filter for a week now I can say that it works surprisingly well. I'm not getting complaints of stinking odors anymore and the smell has toned down quite a bit. When I walk in the door now I don't get a big whiff of skunk anymore.

So if you're a little too lazy or don't have the time to throw together a carbon filter and are looking for an effective and cheap method of odor control I highly recommend picking up a True Air odor control thingy for 15 bucks.

MajPotHead's post is perfect  cheap and works, I already have 1 carbon filter that I bought, but I am going to build 1 of these too. I plan to add a 2nd flange to the bottom of bucket and just drill that area so it can be duct outside. Great OG save my friend.

I was going to build my own, but ended up just buying one. I contructed a stand/frame for the 55 pound scrubber. Hell, I've only got 4 plants going right now (started with 8 but had 4 males). I know if I didn't have that scrubber it would stink to high heaven! I can also finally keep my closet door closed now without worrying about heating issues. I cut a hole in my cieling and vent the air to the outside. Everything cost me about $350. It was well worth it! I realize you can't spend that much money. But you can't cut a hole in your cieling. I'll just patch mine right up when I'm done. It's simple and I have figured all of this stuff out myself.

Ponics.

Hey MajPotHead what do ya think

I just got a squirrel fan I have to figure out how to connect,a square to round :bat: Thanks for the idea

stoned I think you need more and bigger holes, you're not getting very much airflow with holes that small. You can put holes all the way around it on the sides too if you design it right

good point tokin. another solution would be to cut the bottom out and cover it with some layers of window screen (you can buy the screen in rolls) and poly fill insulation for the inside of comforters. the layers of window screen will hold the carbon in and the poly fill will keep the small pieces from getting out.
