This is my first time doing soil growing for mj, I am growing LS and SB they are four days old. I am using 150 watt cfls, RO water, what are good ferts to start them on or is it too soon for ferts and how oftern should I water and/or feed these seedlings.

Heve they sprouted? If not, keep the soil moist. After that wait for your first set of real leaves. Get all the soil moist, and wait. I usually wait until the soil is dry a half inch down or so. Water again and see how they are going. I usually do a feeding at the second really full watering.

By then you should have a few leaves beyound the first set, and then it's time to listen to your plants and see what they are asking for. I use a richly composted potting mix (my own mix) with plenty of perlite, worm castings and mycor to give the little youngins plenty of access to the nutes already in the soil.

Wait to add more nutes after you see how they react to the first feeding. If they like it, they will thrive, if not they'll grow slower and that's the sign to add the same amount and just water. The nutes in veg should be high in N, and I prefer organics. Lotsa guano mixes have done me well. My 2¢

hey there james lee, Like to help you , what type of soil/soiless mix are you useing? I use promix w/25percent perlite added. I then slowly start to add ferts to my watering , adjusting ph to 6 before watering. There are many good ferts and additives too be had, if just one was to be used pure blend pro has a lot of the basic needs covered. I use ph'd water on seedlings until the 4th or 5th set of leaves start . Slow and easy on the ferts is the safe way to care for your young little bitches. goodluck :joint:

Hi everone, I am using Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil mix it has bat guana, earthworm casting, organic humus compost, fish meal and a few other products already supplied. According to instructions on the bag it has enough nutrients to last a month. Right now they are under 150 watt cfl which is set on top of a glass table and the plants or beneath on the floor in a tray they are 15or 18" away from light source. They have one set of true leaves and 2 sets of smaller leaves starting. Should I keep feeding it with RO water and a drop of b-1. Is anyone familar with FF Ocean Forest plant mix if so write back and let me know what you think.

I hear that FF Ocean Forest mix is good enough with water for veg stage or a good period amount of time which is also like you stated a month, no fert is needed or it might be overferted..I think it would be cool to add a drop of b-1 to promote the roots..just not sure when though

When they are just sprouts, the Ocean Forest will be just fine for them. Although, I always added about 20% extra perlite to help buffer the strength of the soil a bit and to loosen the soil a bit more for easy root development.

As far as when to feed them nutes, I would wait until you have FOUR nodes of growth and then I would feed them for the first time. This is usually around 3-4 weeks from germination. Then, I would feed them with a VERY diluted mix of vegatitive nutrients (most specifically, 1/4 strength of the recommended amout). As far as frequency of feedings goes, there are several schools of thought out there. However, the most knowledgable and practiced growers on this board really don't feed that frequently and their plants have the least problems and always look lush and healthy. In fact, a few months ago, Mandala Mike of Mandala Seeds started a thread on "fertilizing wisely". It's a really great read and I highly recommend you take a look at it before decided on a feeding regimine. Here's the link to his thread:

Also, one of the most respected breeders here on ICMag, BOG, always gives the plants a little bit of Superthrive (most specifically, two or three DROPS from a dropper per gallon of water) early on in flower to help with "bud set". This is a B-Vitamin supplement that is available at all major nursuries and even at Walmart. Use it only once in with your bloom nutes about 7 days into 12/12.

Other than that, just feed them when they look like they need it and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS monitor your PH of your nute mixes AS WELL AS testing the PH of runoff water! I've found that most nutrient deficiencies are as a result of the PH being too high or too low rather than not having enough nutes in the soil.

JLP et al:

The Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting and planting soils have always worked very well for me. The unfortunate thing is that in my neck of the woods there is only one place that sell's it, and that is a three hour round-trip drive away. It's time to think of the direct mail option considering the cost of gas.

I digress..

Sometimes I mix in a little Miracle Grow potting soil. It doesn't seem to hurt and this mix works well outdoors, particularly if you cant' get to the grow for a few weeks.

I used this on some recent acqusitions:

D.J's Blue Moonshine, Chimera\D.J. Mental Floss and SOL Block Head.

(Thanks for the freebies Dutchgrow!)

I always add Mexican bat guano (8-5-1), bone meal, blood meal, worm castings (can't have enough of this), a little extra perlite and LARGE vermiculite. I also always add compost from my pile and mycorrizae. At flowering I add Peruvian Seabird guano (0-40-0) and Fox Farm Tiger Bloom. I always feed with EarthJuice nutes, Thrive Alive B1 and Super Thrive in this soil mixture. They work great, but you have to watch the pH, as Earth Juice is a bit more acidic compared to some of the other products out there. I will sometimes you'll have to add Epsom salts or CalMAg to beat back Mg deficiencies. GH Fulvic acid is also an ammendment that works well to create humates.

I used this mix on some of those Amnesia 99' I acquired a few moths back.

I got two phenos. One was leggy and airy, the other was, squat, dense (and blue, purple and red!) The were done in soil indoors under two 400 HPS/MH sitch lamps with the above nutes.

That was SOME medicine James Lee!

Gracias!

I can only hope the BM, Mental Floss and Blockhead come out as nice

Regards,

Rocs

Just another note. I see a lot of people are using Fox Farm products here as well. The Light Warrior mix has active mycor bacteria, sphagnum moss, and a LOT of perlite mixed in already. It's great to mix with a clumpier potting mix that needs some lightening up. The active bacteria will help the nutes that are already in the soil become more readily available to the plants as the composting material in the mix breaks down.

How to change EC into ppm's

How to change EC into ppm's

I have an Hanna Gro-check combo and have been using ppm's instead of EC but I was reading the info you posted of Mandela and he was telling how to subtract the EC value of the water you are using and in my case I am using RO water which has a ppm of 10. How would I convert EC into PPM so I may know how to calculate my nute amounts? Is there somewhere I can look for this information?
