Nute burn

Sigh...
So I thought the Miracle grow potting soil I bought would be fine but it looks like it is burning my plants. This is the first grow I've done and I didn't realize just how touchy they were at the start.

My plan at the moment is to go out tomorrow and buy some new soil from the local garden shop and then replant them. I was goign to remove as much of the current soil as possible from the roots. Should this solve the problem?

I'd take pictures but I'm too tired now to do it. It looks like pretty classic burn from what I can tell though, with the end of the leaves tipped yellow. Its only on its second set of real leaves atm.

Also, it seems to be growing slower then others I have seen on the site. I'm almost into my second week and its only just growing its second set of real leaves now. Could this be a cause of that?

Thanks!

Yep, miracle grow is known for burning plants early on.

Our little plants don't need external nutes until the coyts yellow. Then begin supplementing with 1/4 strength nutes.

I use just plain Wal Mart potting soil, $1.66 for 40 pound bag. Mix that up with 1 bag Scott's perlite ($2.88) and my plants love it.

There's a lot of ways to make this hobby of ours complicated, but for your first coupla grows, follow the KISS principle. Then, once you've got some experience, you can start messing with more complicated aspects.

They coyts are the starter leaves? Mine are 3/4 yellow, but I'm assuming thats from the nute burn rather then from deficency?

Will the leaves go back to green when I put it in the new soil?

Depending on how big and how yellow and the condition of the situtation. I would find a good nitrogen blend and mix a weak solution up and water feed it to your plants.
my 2 cents

Yes, the coyts (coytledons) are the seedlings first leaves, the round ones. They're the food source for the plant until it can get true leaves and begin drawing food from the soil and light. They will be used up, turn yellow, and die. That's nothing to be concerned about, that's exactly what is supposed to happen.

If that's what you're talking about yellowing, then you've got no worries - everythings doing just what it should. If you're experiencing burning on the tips of the new leaves, that's nute burn from the hot MG soil. Pull em out and transplant them into unferted soil.

seedling raising mix/germination soil

Hard to believe, but they work really well for germinating seeds and raising seedlings... :D

Ripped off some roots

Ripped off some roots

So I am about half way through moving my plants from the miracle grow soil to the new soil I bought and while trying to remove the soil from the roots I lost about 3/4 of the mini root ball off my best looking plant.

Is that plant a gonner now? There were some roots still attached to the step so I went ahead and planted it in the hopes that it will still ralley. They're still small (its just starting on its second node) so I am hoping that'll help.

Also, any idea what I should expect from the plants for the next few days? I'm sure being taken out of the soil, dipped in a bubbler to get the soil off the roots and then replanted is a tramatic experience for them. Will they wilt for a few days?

Thanks

yes, they will wilt. This is the right time for superthrive if you have it handy, if not, not that important.
Letting the soil really getting dry prevents ripping of most of the roots when trying to get rid of the soil, wet soil is really heavy and sticks :(
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that kind of stress at that age is something to be avoided under any circumstances :(

gl, i hope they don't die,

Any idea when I can consider them safe? Like if i wake up tomorrow and they're still alive, will they probably make it?

I just know i'm going to checking on them on an obsessive basis and I don't want to get my hopes up that they'll survive.

next time....if you absolutely must use MG time release soil mix for seedlings go thru and pick out the little gel balls of nutes...if one of the roots wraps around one these b4 they get old enough it burns em...its a pain in the ass but it will work if you have to do it.
you might want to add some pelletized lime to that soil or your PH will drop thu the floor locking out nutes about 2 tablespoons per gallon of soil

this is the lime you need

Why is the pH going to drop?

MM,

I would guess the pH will drop due to peat in the mix as well as high phosphorous in MG.

If you must obsessively looking in on them (and I do understand)-don't I repeat don't add anything or touch them or move them-just let them be. I know its ahard, but you must say NO.

I use powdered dolomite lime myself. I think the pelletized might be slow release but I am not completely sure. Talk to Lavendre Cowboy or Burn1 with respect to the lime.

I had simillar issues with my first grow-I used Hyponex-nearly killed my plants before I got them tranplanted into "Supersoil Brand" potting mix-that was a mistake also-too hot. But they survived and I got them into a hot organic soil where they finished-no great yields but the best bud I ever smoked (mostly because I grew it-not from potency).

I am still trying to figure out the soil mix that works for me.

I bought new soil and replanted them so I'm out of the miracle grow and into the glorious..."Generic Walmart Potting Soil" mixed with some scott's perlite.

That's the ticket :D This hobby is only as complicated as you make it! It is, after all, a weed

I thought the pelletized lime took forever, i have the basic same stuff, and just took a cup full and folded it in a apron and tap it with the sledge a few times on concrete, it will work, till this bags gone

Well its been like 9 hours since I changed out the soil and my babies are looking pretty good so far.

God, its going to be scary if/when I become a father. I am crazy over protective/proud of these little guys already.

Here is some picture goodness (need to print some out for my wallet)...
