Notes from Underground - 250 watt scrog cabinet

we are definitly in full flower. from here on out I will only do minor training and some fan leaf clipping. I think the fullness of the screen is a big improvement over the last grow. I'd estimate that last time 30-40% of my screen was not filled out last time, now it is totally filled.



the right side looks the best so far. It is also the module that has the tallest and shortest plants.



of course the left has its charms

also better than last time was my attempt at cloning. All cuts are now rooted and in soil. I noticed that there was a pretty direct correlation between root growth and water temp. When I kept the closet door closed the powerhead would heat the water into the high 80s (just guessing) When the water was warm i'd notice lots of nice new root growth, when it was cooler they seemed to stall out. I was kind of afraid to let it get too warm though.

I;ve been having to close up the clones in a cardboard box lately because some people are doing work on the house. I really need a veg cab. I think they are doing well. I gave them some 1/5th strength nutes the other day and they shot up.


there are 2 24 watt cfls in there now. I definetley need some more light for them.

I made a little hood that I think is cute.


I may even get a medium base 175 mh bulb to use in the little hood (i've already got a ballast)

Leaves are much frostier than papaya was


Something caught my eye when I was looking at the plants the other day and I realized that the calyxes were purpling.

These pics were taken a few days ago on day 34, there are about 150 "primary" budsites.


I am having fun looking at the pink/purple.

2 plants are showing minor coloration. There is the most color under the screen in the shade.


back above the screen they look like this


Here's a purplish bud next to a green one (different plants) There is not a whole lot of difference but you notice it more in person.


I can hardly wait till halloween.

oh wow I just saw this and was highly amused so i had to share it.

I was looking at paint samples and thought hey there's a cannabis color scheme. Then I read the names, :lol: Herbal Garden #420D, Aurora Orange #210. It looks like there is a bong on the table too lol


Its funny because the brochure is from home depot, and they have big signs on the doors that say "we drug test," and iirc the founder of home depot is a huge contributor to social conservative causes.

hey ezra, This time I am doing nirvana Jock Horror. Since I've done a "taste strain" I figured i'd do a "high strain" for my second run.

TML16, right back at ya! I hope we can convince people that 250s are a perfect size for personal smokers.

I'm impressed man. It goes to show you some serious smoke can be produced with a 250 if grown right. 150 budsites is awesome. I might have to try this kind of scrog with my 250.

hi bd, I could have sworn I saved an image of hps ballast wiring. But I can't find it now. I also can't find my sheet that came with my ballast. I could try to remeber off the top of my head but that wouldn't be advisable lol.

I am sure you can find a hps wiring diagram somewhere on IC. I am sure you will like your 250. When I first turned mine on I cackled with insane glee like a mad scientist.

I am mad. I typed up a long relply and then it was eaten by the the United Arab Emirates censorship proxy . When you use tor you proxy from random exit nodes and some countries block certain sites. censorship sucks! I usually type in a notepad window and then paste so this kind of thing won't happen. I am one of those people who takes forever to type out a reply.

Sorry bud, my ballast is *really* hard to get to, but it is the exact same as that. That diagram is all you need, hmmm looks a little faded. Just connect the lamp base as shown("a2" to the tip of the lamp base which is probably black. the other wire to the outside terminal of the lamp base) If you are in the USA cut up a power cord and connect black to 120V, white to com, and green to the screws you mount the transformer with. That ballast is noisy so be prepared to take countermeasures. I like to use wirenuts AND tape to feel the safest. Make sure you really cram the wires into the nuts so the threading will bite. Then tape up the oustide to ensure nothing conductive like a stray frayed wire gets in there.

your comments remind me of something I have been meaning to mention about space and training. My first grow I didn't have a good understanding of the plant's lifecycle so I erred on the side of underfilling the screen. Of course I had seen lots of pictures and posts but that is no substitute for seeing it in person. After that first run I had a much better idea of what to expect with flowering stretch and screen fillage. Also I was lucky and had 2 more females so I didn't have to veg any longer than last time. Last time I had about 100 budsites, this time about 150 So 50% more plants means 50% more budsites in the same amount of time I guess

Of course I am not complaining about the papaya yield. It has lasted me 7 months so far at the rate of about 5 bowls per day. I probably have about 1/2 oz left of the original stash.

Stay tuned for the next update, it should be fun because I am going to cut some pink buds that ended up in a bad place behind the screen.

you can't see it under the orange light but one of the plants has started to yellow signifigantly I will give it some extra food in the next few feedings (there are only a few left anyway )


in a different closet, and I got a veg cab.


the new cab is 18"x22"x29" on the inside. I got it at target for 90$, a little more than I'd like to pay but thats ok. All the other small cabs I looked at were cheaper but would have required more work. This one is attractive and it came with wheels and a nice surface on the top. It seems like it would be a good size for a well executed semi-micro grow with cfls or a small hid. I still need to seal it up with weatherstriping and hang something reflective on the walls. I also need to add one more light socket/reflector to the bar and replace those 24 watt cfls with 40 watters.

Several of the clones have gone into 3-leafleat and 1-leaflet leaves. I found a post that said this happens when you take clones a few days into 12/12 (which is what I did) and this is nothing to worry about.


This is behind the top of the screen on the left side. Some of the pink buds didn't make it through the screen. the one on the right is in a very bad place, it grew up into the 1/2"x1" channel in the corner of the cab lol, you can see its leaf sticking out on the very fisrt pic in this post and see what I'm talking about.

I figured it would be best to clean out that area a tiny bit.


These plants are stinky, maybe more than papaya. I was pretty much forced to build the veg cab because of odor. When I slide out a flower module it stinks up the room for a few hours, enough that I am paranoid the neighbors might smell it if I open a window.
