Not cool

I redesigned my small cab (21"X27"X33") and put in a 150 hps to increase yield a little ...and mostly for fun. I exhaust it with a 4" Vortex inline. I drilled six .75" holes in the top for exhaust and a 4" hole in the bottom back of the cab for a passive intake. I also tore out most of that flimsy-ass mylar and painted flat white. But it ain't cooling right. In fact it freaking heats up good with just the CFLs on. I'm going to put some loose steel wool in the intake hole to keep out bugs and dust but I doubt that'll do much for cooling. It might help toward light proofing though. I'm pretty much just sitting here scratching my head what to do. Oh, I also put a Speedster controller on that Vortex but when I use any lower setting besides full on, the fan hums pretty loud. No biggy. It's in a room by itself. Just sucks. Hahaha. Pretty punny. Anybody got any ideas I might try?

Have you thought about getting a cooltube type setup? In a box that small with that much light (especially from the HPS) your temps are going to be a bitch to keep in a reasonable range. I would think the best way would be the cooltube type setup.

I redid my math and made a bad error. My intake is way too big for the size of the exhaust holes. There are actually only four 1" exhaust holes and a 4" intake. I need to either drill another exhaust hole or two or try to block some of the intake. It'll probably still be warm in there, but that might help some, I think. A cool tube would be good for the hps, but the CFLs heat it up too. Any math wizards out there to check my numbers? Which would be better? Blocking or drilling.

first post your 6 .75" holes gives you a bit more than 2.65" of area for exhaust, three more holes will get you close to 4".Second post 4 1" holes = 3.145" of exhaust area +1 hole makes close to 4".Sounds like your trying to use the fan to pressurize the cabinet and force the air out the vent holes. Why not just run a 4" out and connect the fan to extract from the 4" be way more efficient...surely it can be done and keep things stealthy for you.peace.
