North African weed in the 70s - share your experiences

C

Carlos Danger

I'm looking for information on weed in North Africa in the 1970s, before the hashish market was shoved westward from its traditional roots and altered the growing landscape. I've a precious clutch of seeds here that have piqued my interest. A certain zen hippie I knew hiked across N. Africa in the 70s and collected seeds as he went. These were all grown out and bred together, so whatever I have is a mishmash of whatever was available across N. Africa at some point in the seventies. Anyone who was there in that era, can you share your memories? I'd love to hear any stories any of the old heads have to share.

edit: Ach, seems like we have a whole lot of interest from the views, but no input from the old heads :(.

Hello Carlos,
I was in 1976 - 1979 on vacation in Morocco.
Ketama, was then famous among cannabis enthusiasts.
Hashish had real top quality.
I also collected seeds that were really good.
But Asian varieties were much stronger and more potent.
The turn was more magical and trippy.
the effect difference was like between pink floyd (Sumatra tripping weed) and the who (morocco seed)
also the growth pattern of the Asian plant was much more elegant and harvest per plant is much higher.
The grow pattern of the marocco plants was much shorter.

This is a most intriguing topic, the hashplants of Northern Africa certainly resemble middle eastern plants more so than Sub-Saharan types. I think the original kif strain is still grown up there in the mountains, but is in danger due to all the importing of seed.
I'm growing a Moroccan landrace that has thin spear shaped buds and semi wide leaves - very different from your typical Affie or full blooded indica. Its been through alot of rain and shows no mold, the smell is very piney.

There is another strain, called "Torup Highland" that "Originates from Northern Africa and has been grown in Denmark for around 15 years."

Hi Rinse,
great foto!
Are hashish and Kifplants different?
I always thought it is the same plant,
just a different preparation.

greetings

Hi Sota, the photo is from cannaseeds where they have the Torup Highland strain.
Yes its the same strain but Moroccans were mainly weed smokers before they started making hash, and now many feilds are Pakistan genetics and other imported seed.

Thank´s Rinse,
i also see in the seventies many old man smoking kif with this long thin pipes.
Unfortunately, I've never tried it.
Was too focused on zero-zero:)
But the difference in the effect would interest me greatly.

greetings

Those long pipes are called sebsi's, they are the best pipe imo, gives a smooth toke, only water bongs give a better toke.
I never tried kif but Ive heaard some people say its mild and lasts 20 min whereas others say it blew them away for hours lol.

It was grown in a forrest in the middel of Denmark. think it was plantet out late, about mid to end june, and that´s late in this country, the norm says may, but it differs. It is 10 days since harvest. Must say that the high was out standing, and very sativa,( maybe because of a early harvest??) sometimes it felt like the start up on a mushroom trip, I saw a geometrical pattern on the forrest floor a few times....the high continues for about 3-5 hours.
