Noise control...

Hey all...

Hope someone can help me out. I have some noise issues with my grow. I'm in my garage and some of grow (my veg and clone spot) is right up against the outside wall.

I am all hydro (which I know is part of my problem). I have 2" foam board insulation against the wall, but that does very little to dampen the noise. Pumps, fans, dehumidifier, a lot of vibrational sound.

I am thinking about total redesign...moving further into the center of the garage, and increasing the amount of insulation directly around the grow. But figured I'd ask here before I got too involved with ripping my shit apart. (I have it pretty dialed in, except for the sounds)

My concern is that my spot will not withstand ANY even casual investigation...ie: meter reader, etc. Much less LEO coming around for whatever BS reason. IT'S LOUD!!

I live in a private spot, and it's mine...so my concerns are somewhat remote, and far fetched...but I'd rather be safe!!

Thanks in advance. :tiphat:

Im building in a garage and plan to make a walkway out of the wall thats exposed to my driveway and the walkway to my door. That will act as a barrier between the grow rooms and the outside world. Im just going to keep my res in there and store my nutes and shit there.

If you use sound-proof construction techniques it is amazing the amount of noise that can be muffled/silenced. I assume that you have some kind of structure inside the garage. If you use 2x6 top and bottom plates with 2x4 studs, or 2x8 plates with 2x6 studs, you can alternate the studs so that there is no continuous path for vibration/noise to get from one side to the other. This technique calls for two complete stud walls built into the wall, with the insulation turned sideways and "woven" between the studs. Speaking from experience, it is unbelievable how much noise reduction you can achieve with this building style.

Any way you can switch to something like E&F or Drip through a medium?

Huge noise reduction there.

Fans? Man... those are the worst, eh? Wishing they built an 8" whisperline fan. :) Hehehehehe.

Rives has the scoop on soundproofing though... it's all about isolating vibration and dampening emitted acoustics. You'll get it. :D

you can hang all equipment what makes vibration whit biking gourmets or heavy duty rubber bands what ever you find and can handle the weight whit out stretching them on full length, also insulated ducting and sound proofing different equipment can be made quite cheaply and depends mostly of the sound quality is it high or low hertz - almost all sounds what goes through walls is low hertz from vibrations of inline fans - if you are using power pumps what can be really noisy i would go whit insulation box, if you need to cool pumps outside reservoir i would go for the box from plywood or other similar cheap material and fill it whit insulation foam, and use pc fan and insulated ducting.

Another issue if going for full sound-proofing is when attaching the sound-proofing medium to the walls, do not have flat surfaces....Ever see in the high end rooms, they use those pyramid shaped 'foam' pieces. It's the same thing as radar invisibility....no flat or linear surfaces to allow sound to bounce off of...

Just an example of what I am talking about....

Good Luck

That last part about a private spot...your concerns should be just as high as someones whos not.
Emergencies happen. Strange people show up at your door.
I live out a bit as well and just this year we had a eletrical pole fire near my place. Firefighters and electrical workers walking within 5 feet of my exhaust from my grow to access the pole. Glad my can 50 is working well. We also had some evacuations due to wildfire. Must have been 15 police cars driving around the area.
My point is you can never take security lightly. Things happen.

Hey guys, thanks for checkin in...

TS: If I'm gonna "build" anything...like I said, I'm just going to tear down and move deeper into the garage. Building a walkway attachment wouldn't really "fit"' my needs. Thanks.

Rives: my friend...thanks for the link. Good stuff. But usable only if I do the reconstruction that I mentioned. I'm really looking to retro fit my current set up (if possible)?

Hydro: I'm already running drip over rock. I think it's just cumulative noise...it all adds up.

K grower: Yeah, I think hanging my circulating fans might help a bit.

Vukman: Yeah, I wonder about foam egg cart material on the walls, what do you think about reflective material with that? Over the top?? Not sure how that would work? I have VERY little space to play with...pretty tight in there. Another reason to move the spot!!

Negative: Um, YEAH... that's the point of this thread!!!
That's exactly why I'm concerned...you never know what COULD happen!!?
I don't get the point of your post though...Any ideas for improvements to my situation? Other than essentially re stating my concerns with your own nite mare scenario..? Thanks, but I want to fix the problem!!
Shit...I came out of my space late one night a few years ago around 11pm after tending to the girls to find 2 cops with flashlights walking around my neighbors house talking to each other looking for someone...100 maybe 150 feet away...talk about shitting in your pants!!!

So yeah, I want to fix it!! Every time I walk by to take my dog for her daily trek, I'm thinking "wow, that's loud"...if anyone was to get within 15 to 20 feet, it's obvious "something" is up?! It just invites questions I don't really have answers for!?

Thanks all...so far I think moving over and soundproofing the larger part of the garage is probably THE answer!! Just SOOO involved, I guess I was just looking for the lazy stoner way...sometimes you've gotta just suck it up!

I guess some of my point was to address the fact that although you live in a remote area, anything can happen.
To try to give some advice, I will.
I know you are Hydro, possibly a switch to a less equipment heavy system. Less machines equals less noise.
The staggered studs or resilient channels are great to isolate noises from moving through walls.
Fans encased in boxes with insulation will greatly reduce that kind of noise.
Double layers of 5/8" rock with Green Glue will help as well.
Heavy matting on the floor can reduce vibration and low level sounds.
I know sometimes it seems like sooo much work to move things or redesign. In the end it will be well worth it for peace of mind as well as a quality room.

Yeah, no doubt...that's why I'm asking for help..I am a bit concerned.
I know you are Hydro, possibly a switch to a less equipment heavy system. Less machines equals less noise.

That's a good idea...much of the equipment would be the same though. All fans (circulating), dehumidifier, extraction would be the same. The only real difference would be the air pumps and water pumps. A little help, but not enough I'm afraid!?!
I made the switch to hydro after many many years of "soil"...organic amended pro-mix style growing. I just find it much easier to get rid of water than soil. I even recycled my soil for a couple of years until I had a complete failure...never trusted it again!! I still have a huge amount of soil in bins to discard...I wouldn't go back. I have finally conquered the final hurdle with hydro...the taste. Now I definitely won't go back!!

The rest of your tips are good ones...again I WILL need to rebuild in order to implement any of them. I'm like an acrobatic monkey in my current set up...NO extra room of any kind...it's somewhat brutal!!

I know sometimes it seems like sooo much work to move things or redesign. In the end it will be well worth it for peace of mind as well as a quality room.

That's my thoughts as well...especially since all the great tips given here involve rebuilding my walls. If I'm going to do that, I'm going to move. Turn my current mixed room into a veg only and bolster up the outer wall to account for the noise. Then just build the adjacent new bloom space correctly!! Like I said, I think I just have to SUCK IT UP!!

Thanks for the tips.

good answers all around. another thing i may add to this is to add some rubber bushings to your fan mounts, or if theyre hanging, use some rubber bungie cords. works well to help reduce noise/vibration. :2cents:
