Dutch smoking ban to cover coffee shops

Fri Jun 8, 3:49 PM ET

A Dutch smoking ban will come into force in July next year for all restaurants and cafes -- including coffee shops where cannabis is the top attraction, the government decided on Friday.

"Coffee shops will be treated in the same manner as other catering businesses. They will be smoke-free," Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende told NOS television.

"It would have been wrong to move towards a smoke-free catering industry and then make an exception for coffee shops. People would not have understood that."

Establishments will not in fact have to be completely smoke-free. Proprietors will be allowed to set up a separate room or glass partition behind which people can smoke, but customers will not be served there to protect staff.

"Employees should not have to work in an environment were they are constantly exposed to the harmful effects of smoking," Balkenende said after the cabinet's decision on Friday.

Amsterdam's renowned coffee shops, where marijuana can be smoked openly in a relaxed atmosphere, are one of the city's big draws for tourists.

Coffee shop owners argue that the ban only applies to tobacco and was unlikely to hit them hard.

Whilst commonly mixed with tobacco, marijuana can also be smoked on its own, especially in pipes, vaporisers and other contraptions.

Soft drugs are officially banned in the Netherlands but under a policy of tolerance, buyers are allowed to have less than 5 grams of cannabis in their possession.

Damn I haven't even been there yet. So the ban is only for tobacco right?
So can the coffee shops sell herb still. I don't think it will last.

Smokin on that serious...
the trick to cheap airline tickets is buying them absolutley as far in advance as you can, but round trip from JFK would be around 1400

Or you could just get a credit card that gives airline reward miles just for getting approved, then more miles for spending. Im saving up frequent flyer miles for my trip to Amsterdam so it wont cost much.

EDIT: fastest way if you have good credit is to apply for Bank of America's US Airways card and Juniper's US Airways card at the same time. Getting approved for both will get you nearly enough miles for the trip without spending anything.

There was international talk of opening up the trans atlantic airways to any company who wanted to fly as opposed to the few privileged now, supposed to maybe bring the price of trans atlantic flights WAY WAY down.

I cant see why they would ban smoking canna in a cofee shop, its a smoke shop after all.. and they dont want masses of people out wandering the streets totaly bombed on pot because they cant sit down and relax in a shop and smoke there.

I wonder what Milehigh's take on this is.He's usually up on the latest.Airfare,non-stop from Philly is usually about $650.As far as rooms you can find something in any price range.Things can be very small over there though.Worth it at any price. :smoke:

It will. My city has been smoke free for like 4 years now. No smoking indoors anywhere. Not really a big thing, it's surprising how quickly you get used to it.
