No edibles for Kitty

I found this while surfing a page for sick cats...I don't give my cat medicated treats, but I didn't know cannabis was toxic for cats. There's a ton of other plants listed that are not good for Kitty, including peyote and mushrooms. Who knew??

Marijuana: Because I've received numerous emails in the past inquiring if marijuana is toxic to animals, I will make a separate notation of the plant here. All parts of the marijuana plant are toxic to animals. Your pet may suffer from digestive upset, depression, and respiratory depression. If your pet is alert, induce vomiting. Call your veterinarian immediately and observe for symptoms.

When Tarkus and I were working at a vet, a man came in with his German Sheppard that had eaten almost a pound of weed. It was sleeping heavily, but other than that nothing happened. The doc just laughed when the came concernedly asked if he had to call the cops on him.
But cats....well they are fickle creatures. All sorts of things can be bad for cats. Hell, cats can also die from certain cat medicines. Like Hartz, please don't use anything that is Hartz brand for your cat, it is notoriously bad for the felines.

Oh, and Tarkus knew a cat that had been given some shrooms or acid, and it was in a bad way for the rest of it's life. Should have been put to sleep, but the owners were asshats.

Ive had two different roommates cats that ate numerous amounts of my homegrown any free chance they got. Fresh, dry, it didnt matter. Most of the time it was a few buds here and there but more than once I caught them after a 7-10 gram feast on a potent skunk hybred. Nothing happened ever but what you think it would. Stoned and nappy cat. To make a claim like that without one ounce of science to back it up makes me wonder how much of her other information should be taken seriously. Besides pets that choked on the baggies anyone ever hear of a toxic death from MJ on any animal? My friend is a vet and she never has.

Two cats, neither will touch cured weed. But one loves the tips of fan leaves. No other part, just fresh tips on big fans.

Never once seen her get sick afterwards. Now let her eat a blade of grass from front lawn and she's leaving puke turds everywhere.

SHENANIGANS! Marijuana has not been found to be toxic anywhere, at anytime, in anyone, or anything, by any means of ingestion, ever. Perhaps in a kitten, or lower rodents, there could be a slight risk of heart palpitations, possibly leading to cardiac arrest. Show me when this has happened, and maybe I'll buy it.

It has a number of physiological effects that can be hazardous, beyond the potential of damage that smoke can cause. Most of the adverse effects are within the range tolerated for most medications, and within the range expected for someone looking to get high. So what about a pet?

Forget all these tales, like "cat's can't break down THC, so they just keep getting higher and higher and never come down!" or, "They get high, but you have to blow the smoke in their EAR!" Cats and dogs are a lot like people. Some like to smoke, some like to drink, some prefer one to the other, and some are straightedge. Let your pet make an informed decision. ie: don't force them, and only blow a very little bit at them if they persist in checking out what you are doing.

Remember, just a bit of your exhale could be the same to them as a 7 foot tall binger for you. It most likely isn't, but we don't know, so go SLOW! Also, don't do this to puppies/kittens. It goes against letting them have some say, and I swear it messes them up. I got a relatives husky stoned when she was a puppy, and she just started yapping away. Apparently, vocalizations are common in animals under the influence of weed. I'm not sure how common it is for the dog to tear across the lawn, and drop a shoulder to the dirt at full speed- in order to tumble like an olympian- cuz that's what the dog did next. And she's been wacky ever since!
