Nirvana Northern Lights Pure Indica Review

I haven't seen a lot of reviews on Nirvana's "Northern Lights Pure Indica" strain on IC so I thought I would document my experience growing this strain. My setup is a 250 watt HPS and I used this for both veg and flower. My style is soil, LST and mostly organics.

Last September I planted 5 seeds, 2 seeds failed to sprout leaving me with 3 plants that were veg'd for 43 days to about 6-7" tall. It shouldn't have taken this long to veg but I found out part way through veg that my 2 year old FFOF soil was almost completely depleted of nutrients, and I almost starved my plants to death. After I transplanted into 1.4 gallon pots at day 36 of veg, adding 3 teaspoons of bloodmeal and 2 tablespoons of lime per gallon of soil, my problem was solved. They did the best when the ph was between 6.1-6.5 and daytime room temperatures between 72-78deg. Two out of the three plants turned out to be female. One female had more indica characteristics and the other was more sativa. But really they were both very indica dominant not really any sativa. The indica was smaller, had tighter buds and produced less weighing in at 1.85OZ dried. The sativa had big "foxtail" buds and produced more yielding 2.34OZ. This was a total of 4.19OZ dried, both were weighed after 7 days of hang drying before being put into jars. The indica I flowered for 56 days and the sativa for 63 days. Both pheno types were hungry and needed lots of nitrogen, more so for the sativa pheno. I harvested when the amber trichomes were around 25% on the indica pheno and 5% on the sativa pheno. They tripled in size during flower. The dried indca buds have a more piney smell and the sativa has a more sweet pineapple pastry smell. I have not smoked any yet because of my job, but I have listed some testers at the end of this report. Overall I would say the grow experience was pleasant and the genetics very hardy, so I give the genetics a 9 out of 10 for growth and hardiness. If not for the slight variation in pheno types I would say a perfect 10. As for the high I cannot rate it until I have tried it. Some other things worth noting are, they were stinky, this is contrary to what I have read about the northern lights strains so maybe its just Nirvanas version. I think they smelled more during veg than flower. I feel that I made a mistake by not feeding the last two weeks and sacrificed a lot of weight in doing so.

Sativa
------
person a - Clear headed, pleasant, didn't feel lazy, no raciness. Overall score is a 7.5
person b - Did not test

Indica
------
person a - Complex, vivid, medicinal. Overall score is a 8.5
person b - Totally mellow, no raciness, giggly, couchlock

Below are some pics I took. The indica pheno I harvested on Christmas eve and I got a little carried away with the decorations.

Man, those are some really nice flowers and attest to your growing skills and Nirvanas genetics.

Good Show !!

What an insanely high calyx-leaf ratio. You really don't need to trim those.

But why do you call one a sativa pheno, it just looks like a slightly taller plant but otherwise the same structure.

Probably just for reference. I've did the same thing myself, referred to the more sativa pheno as the sativa pheno.

Hey ticktok, you have any pics of the plants early on showing how you LST'd them? I would like to see how you did it if that's possible and not too much trouble.

Thanks.

yeah, looks like a good yielder, can't go wrong with NLx

but I can't see any sativa influences in that sativa pheno.. looks the same but slightly taller

I'm glad you did this report. I've searched NL reviews and not found many, surprisingly. I have a NL x BB supposed to arrive but we'll see, it's been taking forever. But I hope they do if the effect of the strain I get is giggly. I was afraid it's just a straight up sit-you-down type that other than being stoned doesn't have much character. So I hope mine turns out like yours.

I had the pleasure to grow this strain a few years ago and it was awesome in yield and potency:joint:. Some old outdoor pics... sorry for the low quality.

I tried to respond to everyone below in order. Thanks for all the good words. Let me clarify something, both of these plants were very inidca dominate. The taller of the two had longer node spacing and took longer to fill out so I called her a sativa just for reference. I am totally amazed at what a 250W HPS lamp can do. I have one of the cheap sun systems that has the built in ballast. I would also like to voice my opinion on flushing like a lot of people suggest doing the last 2 weeks of flowering. Don't do it!! It doesn't do anything except drop your yield weight. These plants were flushed and are just as harsh as my last grow where I did not flush. The only thing that fixes that is a good long cure. Also I would like to mention that I used Brer Rabbit Molasses and my plants loved it. I have never had healthier plants. I fed about 1 TBS every other watering.

Thanks again for all of the compliments!!

scaramanga,
Thanks!

hansel,
Thanks!

love?,
Yup just a 250W HPS.

VirginHarvester,
I trimmed the heck out of them. My weight would have been higher. Like I said in the report the sativa leaning pheno was really just a taller indica. I was misleading they are both very indica dominate.

CannaExists,
Exactly!

Jenn,
Thanks!

VirginHarvester,
Sorry but no.

endlesssummer,
Yes a bit missleading with my wording. Both are very indica dominate.

VirginHarvester,
Good luck. I hope you report back with a grow report.

DownSouthSage,
Hard to tell. The sativa leaning pheno took longer to fill in. Mine looked like your picture about half way though at 4 weeks. You still have at least another 3 weeks left.

blan-k-flor,
Nice!!

420oclock,
Thanks!

irieeyes808,
Thanks. I love the 250W HPS it does a good job.

outdoe,
Thanks!

Awesome review and AWESOME plants especially for a 250w. That is seriously very impressive. Hopefully you can enjoy the smoke yourself sometime soon.

Very nice job man. I'm getting ready for my first indoor grow and these are on a "short list" of choices to make.

Thanks for the report.

Peace,
