Newbie Ventilation advice

I finally got an okay from the wife to go ahead with a small personal grow room

I intend to build a closet in my basement that when I am in my off season(s) I can actually say is...well, it's a closet.

The one thing that's been plaguing me before I start my "imagineared" project is: proper ventilation. I intend to never grow more then 4 plants (maybe). I want to have the room big enough to have my Vegetation and Flowering together (separated of course). Also I will have to use this same room for my drying/curing (again separated from any light). So naturally I will have one wonderful smelling room. However this room is in my house and my house is not a reclusive place buy any means. This room will be secure, non-obtrusive and best of all, functional. I just have no previous experience in this and not sure what kind of smell I will be dealing with.

Outside ventilation will be tough. I have heard using your houses plumbing ventilation (stink pipes) are good sources. I however don't see any option for this being where the room will be placed. I MAY have an option for going out the chimney but that would be in the "obtrusive" and possibly obvious category. So here's what I am thinking.

• The room will have a intake and an exhaust on opposite ends.
• At this point I am not sure if any fan is needed to pull air in. But I will have one exhausting out.
• I have heard that you can use a Ether disc as a neutralizer for the smell. So I would have this outside the room cleverly hidden. That along with the exhaust fan running possibly through a charcoal filter then through a box to mix it (or is it before?) then back out to a nice clean looking vent.

• Then as an added affect I will have dryer sheets behind the vent to make that air smell April-Snuggly fresh!

When I was young and my parents left for the weekend a party was always in order. I used to use dryer sheets to freshen the house afterwards. Those along with cross ventilation really got the smell of a night of partying in a non-smoking house out!

So does this sound do-able?

many things you can do. you can vent outside if you have the time and ability to set that up of course. OR

* you can use carbon filters to soak up the stink before the air enters the room from your closet

* you can by a negative ion air purifying lamp/light which cleans the air by attracting all the particles floating around in it. i've seen a few people on youtube using them, i've never done it so i dunno how well it'll work but yeah research it. you can buy these gloves and just put them in any light fixtures you have in your basement! here's a link to one

* you can also use odor neutralizing or masking products that you can mount on the wall or can just spray from time to time that collect/cover odours.

Thanks for the tips darwinsbulldog. I look forward to starting this long awaited project in the next few weeks. I will track my progress for others to learn too.

Have you considered a sealed room ? If you're only doing a few plants, this would be ideal, since high temps are not usually an issue in a basement. The key is to have sufficent CO2, since air is not being brought in and exhuasted out. You could spend the money you were going to spend on fans / filters, on a bottled CO2 setup instead. With CO2 enhanced/sealed rooms, your plants will tolerate slighty above average temps better, and you'll get maximum buddage per watt. Just a thought.

Well, I agree with darwinsbulldog.... outside is a good place to vent!!! It's not constant blowing directly on plants and it gets fresh air & sunlight!!

Given the situation the OP presents, I'd do a sealed room with CO2 AND carbon filtering. That way inside smell is covered and there's no outside smell from venting. If the chimney is an option I'd be considering using it to vent heat from a light fixture, with the light venting seperate from the sealed room of course..
