newb timer and electricity questions

stream

New member
what kind of timer should i use for a single 1000watt hps light? i am just starting and i am paranoid about fire, so i can spend a bit of money to make sure i get good equipment. i would perfer something that i could pick up at a local east coast us store or special order from a local store, but i could order online if necessary.

also, i know nothing beyond plugging things in but i want to learn more about electricity and wiring. my eventual goal is to have everything done to code, or really close to code, but i need to learn how to do that first. can anyone recommend a book or a series of books i could start with to learn more about electricity and wiring?

Thanks for your questions Stream, as I'll be just as interested in some responses. It's REALLY hard trying to convince someone to plug another K bulb when you have NO CLUE, how much the lines can even handle! I need some SERIOUS electrical help:D

More specifically; I'm interested in finding out how many Watts/amps/nodes whatEVER it is, that I can pull straight from the wall. All I DO know, is where my box IS, beyond that I feel like the girls aree suffering due to my lack of knowledge!

you just need to get a timer which is marked for anything higher than 1000w, mine are for 3000w and were the cheap kind so you probably will find them easily.

best book? google.. lol..you can learn a lot from google and wikipedia, but try going to the library if you have the time/patience.

stoned cold, it depends on your box and where you live. for example i live in a house where i get 220-240v (this is the same in the whole country) and my box has a 30amp fuse/breaker, so i know it will be around 6600w (w=v times a)the max that i can pull without it breaking.

You just need to find out what's the voltage in your contry, check your box and see what the max. amp. is, and then multiply ;)

NEED JUICE!

NEED JUICE!

Yo, thanks muchly Hedpi; I DID infact just check for my numbers and, well let's just go ahead and FORGET IT! :puppydoge My spot's already pushin' between 13-16 amps on a 20a circuit:( Oh well, now I know, and knowing IS........)

...waitacottonpickin MINUTE here; So if there's 3 big 'breakers' on the box, rated at 30 amps, can I find whichever fuse I need and switch it out w a 30 amp fuse? All of the fuses are rated between 15-30a ATM but does that mean I've got more juice left to pull from the 15a fuse that leads to the spot? Also, the only information I found on the voltage is on the box it says 120-240v. I know I'm atleast sniffin' in the right direction, any help is greatly appreciated by me and about 20 topnotch bitches:D

Jacking up fuse ratings is NOT suggested. Most usually the home builder will wire the circuit for the needed amps, they dont intentionally over rate the wire.

A better way would be to figure out where the 30A circuit is..and what it would take to get your power from that. Even 10/3 extension cords are not that expensive!!

Or..another way of putting it..much cheeper than invoking your fire insurance policy.

LOL...I like your thinkin' :D TRUE DAT!
The the one 30a fuse leads to the majority of the neccesities, good idea though. Appreciate your advice, if I wasnt me, you could've saved somebodys spot, there ARE some ignorant people in the world, BELIEVE ME!
Thanks!

Yo, I'm a freakin GENIOUS I tell ya,....I just burned one down and thought about it for a minute and came to a conclusion. I could simply divide my flowerspace and run alternating dark periods! Set my timers for 11 1/2 hrs on each, and be able to DOUBLE my flower room :D

CASE CLOSED!....atleast for me, today

That's a pretty good idea, but light-proofing stuff is never as easy as you think :D There are conversion boxes you can get to run from your 220. It basically gives you 4 110 outlets that can each handle a 1kw light. I'm baked and don't remember what they're called, but they run about $160. There is also a guy on the board here, "DB2004" who makes these sorts of things and will send it to you pre-plugged, so you don't have to wire anything at all, and it will be made to your specs.
