newb soil question

This is proally a dumb question but I need a answer. Since this will be my first grow I want to try to keep it as simple as possible so I don't mess anything up. Does anyone know a good pre mixed soil I can get that will allow me to not have to use too many or any ferts during the grow ?

Hi dankedout,
First of all, there is no such thing as a stupid question...only stupid answers. Dont be afraid to ask, the sensible folks here at icmag will lead you in the right direction.

I have had good success with fox farms ocean blend soil. Its got everything you need to get started. BUT....it will not feed the plant full term. You will need to start feeding them when they are 30-45 days old. Organic is my preferance in nutes more forgiving.
But if use chemicals...follow the instructions on the box and you cant go wrong.

hope this helps,
Seed

have you guys tried the moonshine mix thats been posted on here? It seems pretty easy to mix and it says you dont need to feed it for the whole cycle. Anyone tried this ?

I've never used anything straight out of the bag that kept my girls well fed troughout the grow, MJ is a high fert plant so it's only normal to have to add to it.

Ocean Forest is a good strat but you'll need some sort of P source and K towards the middle of flowering you can bet on that.

Try an all in one fert like PBPro veg and soil in a Promix HP with 30% added perlite, it will be cheaper the the FF Ocean Forest wich will need ferts at some point anyhow.

I dislike most MiracleGrow products, especially ones with time release ferts that can burn seedlings unless your aware of their existence.

I totally agree with SUBY,there is no Magic bullet that will sustain a plant through the wholegrow. The needs change drastically. If a person can veg. the plant to a pre-determined heigth, then transplant into a large container with a good mix of blooming ammendments, and add good liquid ferts about midway through bloom..that the way to go.

My suggestion would be to stick with a soil-less (coco , peat , etc) and water in your nutes . You will have WAY more control of what your feeding 'em . And FF is very "hot" on seedlings and clones .

5 parts Canadian Spaghnam Peat or Coir or Pro-Moss
3 parts perlite
2 parts wormcastings or mushroom compost or home made compost
Powdered dolomite lime @ 2 tablespoons per gallon or 1 cup per cubic foot of the soiless mix.

I'm looking to start growing in a month or two and am trying to do as much research before hand as possible. I'm looking to do an organic grow in soil, but this soiless option sounds interesting. Do you have any links that have more information, and maybe any links to more information about good nutes to use, and how to know when to give it what? Any info would be greatley appreciated.

Oops! Sorry, it must be the cough syrup.
Fox Farm Ocean Forest is good right out of the bag. It can be a little hot for seedlings. I would look for a bag of "Seed Starter Mix" at your local Home dePOT or Highs (Lowes). Pour it into a 1 qt nursery pot,sow your seed in it and grow it there until it's about two to four weeks old. Then transplant directly into the FFOF in a 1 gal. pot.
As stated above, you'll have to feed the plants during your grow cycle.
The easiest way I know to feed from there is Pure Blend Pro.
Pure Blend Pro veg formula for hydro/soil and Pure Blend Pro flower formula for Soil. Simply use as directed on the label. It's a stand-alone fertilizer. That means, everything you need is already in there so don't let the guy at the hydro store try to sell you something more.
Veg in the 1 gal. pots of FFOF using the PBP veg formula as directed on the label.
Then, after veg, transplant into 3 gal. pots of FFOF and use the PBP flower formula for soil as directed.
Harvest when ripe.

Sorry for the mixup.

MetaNaturals is an all organic fert that does really well with coco . By watering IN your ferts , you will know EXACTLY what you are feeding your plants and at ph .

Is ph an issue in organic growing, or just in chemical based fert growing? If so what do I need to know about the ph of my water soil before I start a grow?

Ph while organically growing seems to be a bit of an issue 'round here . However I would ph to be on tha "right" side . As stated before , if you ARE goin into soil or a peat based soilless, you should throw some dolomite lime down , to sweeten things up and keep your ph neutral , be easier to control for ya .

Ok, cool. What parts would I want to mix the lime in if I'm going for a soil mix(looking like FFOF at this point). And is perlite already mixed in FFOF or will I need to add that as well? And my last question, since the soil already has nutes in it how long should I wait before feeding my plants the first time?
