Albany, NY (AHN) - In an effort to solve even more crimes, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer says he wants a new law that would require all convicted criminals to submit a sample of their DNA to the state's database.
The move will double the size of New York's genetic database, and is supported by both prosecutors and defense attorneys who say the more samples they receive, the greater the chances of convicting the right person for each crime.
Governor Spitzer explains, "This legislation will help us bring the guilty to justice, and exonerate those who have been wrongly accused."
Currently, the state only collects DNA from certain types of criminals, yet the new bill would open that list to anyone convicted of any crime, even misdemeanors, as well as those already out on parole.
