New years in Amsterdam

Hello all, decided that a single trip to the beautiful city wasn't enough this year so i've booked flights and accomodation for me and a friend to stay 3 nights from the 31st december to the 3rd of january.

Left it a bit late so accomodation was hard to find (also it seems a lot of the hostels implement a 5 night minimum stay during this time) but eventually got a couple of beds in a dodgy chinese hostel on Leidsesplein (sp, sorry.).

Anyone been to Amsterdam for new years? I figure it'd beat staying at home (Scotland) and have always really liked the party going on in Amsterdam. Anyone else going to be out there? feel like meeting a few drunken Scotsmen for a pint or 12?

it is ****ing insanity, the town turns into a total warzone of fireworks. you must get tickets ahead of time for most bar parties. the place to be for the worlds largest impromptu amateur fireworks display is the niewmarkt square. just remember to keep an eye open for assholes who think its fun to toss fireworks at people.

good luck -fb

Will most bars be selling tickets or will there be a few accepting anybody? As long as I can find a few places to get some drinks in i'm happy, not too concerned about going to organised parties and stuff.

Hell with the clubs if you want to drink in public I'm sure you can.Just an assumption never been there myself.I'd like to be roving aimlessly myself if I went.Just develop a severe case of flaskfoot!

there will be some bars accepting people, i remember finding a bar just across from the grey area one year where the party was off the hook and me and some friends just walked into. i also recall the lovely fireworks display Gypsy was putting on on the torensluis bridge on nye 2003-2004. have fun.

I've always wanted to goto the Melkweg so I think i'm going to pick up a couple of tickets for there, its open till 5 so im sure i'll make it along there sometime :) apart from that no plans, just lots of whisky and champagne I think. I'll be sure to scout out near the grey area too, thanks FallenBuddha.
