Is the growth in the pictures normal? Good sign? Bad sign?

Yep those will turn into new secondary shoots...this is how the plant grows outwards...the main branch grows upwards....wen its big and bushy you can take a cutting from these secondary shoots....but obviously wait till its big enough with a good few internodal sections on the secondary shoots.
