Forums used to be the best for hobby specific things but I haven't found that magic in a while.

I think they still are, they are by design, you can't have real discussions on instagram, it's just a onesided/oneway channel, while forums encourage real participation and have you engage in discussions, or at least get different viewpoints on a topic if you're just lurking
