New closet questions

#1 - I've got 88" of vertical space. Any suggestions on how tall a first floor should be if I have two levels? I figure floros under the floor, and will be using HID stuff up top. I was thinking maybe 2' for the first floor, leaving me 5 1/2 feet for the HID floor. Does that sound about right?

#2 - Any plans around for building HID hoods? Anybody do this and might be willing to share?

Thanks folks, trying to get my first grow room done, even if it is only 10 sq. ft. (32 X 50 X 88). Probably won't finish it for a couple weeks, gotta order a stupid door. Can't buy cheap closet doors that swing out around here, gotta order one - 10 days to 2 weeks! Poor planning on my part I guess.

Can you give a few more details? What kind of wattage are you using (to get an idea of how much penetration your lights will have)? Hydro or soil, if hydro what kind of system are you going to use (to get an idea of how much space needs to be reserved for your system).

As far as building hoods, look at the DIY sticky at the top of this forum, there are several designs.

Go ahead and germ your babies while you are waiting, you are going to have some time before you need a whole closet anyway. Good luck!

Wattage? I got two 150 HPS and two 175 MH. Old parking garage lights I picked up for 10 bucks each. I only got 10 sq. ft. of floor space, and figured I'd run one of each? Maybe put the ballasts on the floor? Right now I roughed one up using a piece of the bracket that held the original fixture.

Soil.

DIY sticky?!? I'll take a look. Looked for something like that, missed it. I'll get around the site eventually, just busy with my little closet space.

You can place 150w and 175w bulbs very close to the canopy, so you will not need alot of headroom for flowering. If you grow tall plants with small HIDs, only the tops of the plants will receive adequate light. You should go with SOG, SCROG, or LST to maintain a short dense canopy.

How many plants do you want to run? Fewer plants (SCROG, LST,etc.) = bigger pots, so you'll prob need a little bit more headroom for pots. But I think that 5.5' of vertical space for pots and plants and reflectors will be plenty of space with the bulbs you are using, regardless of your method, provided you maintain a stocky growing habit.

I don't know what SOG, SCROG, or LST mean, but I'll figure it out. Lots of new stuff around for a guy that hasn't grown in over 20 years.

I been thinking about 2 plants budding at a time. I don't need a lot of pot, and plan on giving excess to relatives and a couple very close friends. I can use the bottom of the closet to grow stuff up near 2', take the best, maybe do some cloning, depends on if I get seeds to germinate, and then on how they turn out. Also got a buddy who grows outdoors that I may start some plants for real soon.

Got all the wiring done tonight and the sheetrock up on the "power wall." Getting everything working and tidied up and the sheetrock on was good work, feels good. Everything is switched by one wall switch that will "hide" under stuff after everything is done. I'm under some pressure to get this closet done, as it is adjacent to my 16' workbench, and I often have people over regarding projects I'm working on.

Still got lots to do, including making hoods.

Sorry mate, that was a lot of acronyms!
Welcome back to growing!!! For quite a while (until recently) I worked at a grow shop, so I miss talkin' shop with all the customers. If ya got any questions, feel free to send 'em my way. Remember -- Pot isn't addicting, but growing it is!! Oh, and here's a little translation for ya!!

SOG - Sea Of Green:

Many identical clones planted close together. It offers an even canopy with little training, and requires VERY short veg time, but a high plant count. It looks kind of like a field of big weed popsicles.

SCROG - SCReen Of Green:

One or several larger plants with their branches trained to a horizontal screen. It also offers an even canopy (although with SCROG the canopy requires considerable training), it requires a much longer veg time than SOG, but offers a significantly reduced plant count. It looks like a field of weed popsicles too, but the popsicle sticks grow like ivy through a horizontal trellis.

LST - Low-Stress Training:

One or several larger plants with their meristem (main stem) bent over and tied down to orient it sideways-ish; this is usually repeated with other dominant shoots as they grow. It allows an even canopy as well, without the use of a screen, although I've found it is a bit trickier than SCROG, and requires a little practice to achieve an even canopy. It also requires a much longer veg time than SOG, but offers a significantly reduced plant count.

Interesting stuff. SOG is out. No clones just yet. Very early stages - i.e., letting a small glass of filtered water come to room temp for the few seeds I have. I may be able to pick up some more from a local grower I know today or tomorrow.

LST - maybe later, once I get some of this stuff going.

Running out today for initial materials to get seeds growing, plus pick up other stuff needed for the effort. Got some good ideas for reflectors from the DIY sticky, maybe pick some stuff up for that. Need primer and a good moisture resistant flat white paint. Was thinking of maybe fiberglassing the floor too. Just resin, cloth, resin, roll it out, provide an impermeable surface cheap. I do a lot of fiberglass work, so have all that stuff in the shop anyways.

Got a few more pieces of sheet rock to put up, easy stuff, just waiting for the little woman to get up as the closet is directly under our bedroom. I'm no dummy.

Take a look at the SCROG thread and you will see some examples. Not window screen, more like chicken wire (though chicken wire is horrible stuff, you really want something with larger holes that will cause you to bleed less than chicken wire - just using it as an example to give you the idea that you want bigger holes than window screen).
