I have been lurking in for a long time reading much required material on this site, until I decided its time to move a little forward be more involved.

I am planning to build an approx. 1.5'x1'x1.8' (vol ~3 sqft) grow box made of wood, I might be able to make it a little taller, but still unsure if I can. (will be using LED's)

My main issue that I am conflicted about is with designing the ventilation system. (I have gone over the Vent 101 thread and have seen a lot of the systems here - and unfortunately all the different information has left me confused)

I have tried to fit in two items in my overall design (keeping the fan outside the box)

KSB-100 Acoustic Box Fan - 4 inch - 141 CFM
Phresh Filter 4"x8" - (rated for 150 CFM)

1- I believe it is overpowered and oversized for the space (my calculations say 50 CFM is way more than I will ever need)
2- Carbon filter even at that size eats up a huge of the headroom
3- I would need to create (2) 90' elbow bends in the ducting

Now, I am really concerned about the smell and sound which is why I was looking at the above type fan.

I looked into using a good enough PC fan but was worried not having enough negative air flow to suck thru a carbon filter (also cannot find a proper carbon filter to match pc fan sizes) I would rather not DIY my carbon filter.

Thank you for anybody who can provide some input!

If you buy a 50cfm fan that's measured unrestricted.

Now if you add vent pipes turn corners and through your charcoal. It will reduce that volume.

1) In my experience it is easier to get an oversized AC fan with a speed controller. The only time I have luck with PC (DC) fans is if I do a two stage cooling system.

2) Since you are building the box, can you add the extra headroom into your design and make the box taller?

3) You are going to have to block light no matter which way you do it. The carbon filter is enough to block the exhaust. For the intake you can build a Scrubninja light trap to save space in your micro box.

Good luck bro, hope your box turns out great.
