A great man. Could that we all show his courage in our battle against systems of oppression and inequality.

People of colour continue to be victims of drug war oppression at a higher rate than whites, which only shows we still have inequalities to tackle in our societies.

Wishing him good health and peace for all of his days, a revolutionary that showed one man can make a huge difference in this world.

We need to follow his example and show the same courage in the face of our own respective adversaries.

~Respect to you Mandela~

Hello all,

Had the privilege to hear him speak in 89 while at university. He is a great man.

A political prisoner for a good portion of his life as I recall. He is responsible for many changes that have occurred in South Africa

Well wishes to.

You are right, it must have been a few years later....still the man was interesting to hear

I saw Nelson and Winnie Mandela speak back home in D.C. in the summer of 1993. My mother and the parents of everybody I knew made them go. I literally saw everyone famous in DC my mom knew, every kid from my school, their parents, many grandparents, and every African within 300 miles. 20 years ago this July.....

Mandela spent 27 years in prison. When asked about his time in prison, he responded that
they were the best years of his life because he was surrounded by other freedom fighters.

He has been free his entire life, if you follow his logic.

A mismatched, sprawling gaggle of scavengers stands,
Waiting
For an old lion to pass away.
He exudes majesty, but we can all see
Light starting to fade from his eyes.

Then, they will feast on his bones,
Sell the tale to the highest bidder.
Long necks abruptly ending in all ears,
Mechanical eyes, coldly watching.
They don't miss a thing,
Especially when there's
money at stake.
Sad really.

That aside,
May you find the peace you fought for.
You most certainy deserve it.
Madiba.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
Selflessness incarnate.

A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other side must be closer, and thus emerge stronger. You don't have that idea when you are arrogant, superficial, and uninformed.

He has some nice quotes, i read them from time to time !

There is still a lot of violence and poverty in S.A. & Dagga growers / smokers are still thrown in jail, so i can't say there is much change since his release. The Boesmans are the only example for me.

Keep on growing :)

I live in SA and the change since his release is MASSIVE, anyone who thinks otherwise is evidently blinkered and not taking into account the enormous advances in human rights laws in our country (Our constitution is one of the best in the world IMHO). He achieved a great deal more than most heads of state, I think it's pretty clear..
Sure, marijuana is still illegal, but that's pretty much true worldwide, some people are attempting to demonstrate the discrepancies between the law and constitution in the high court presently.
Not sure what you mean about the boesmans, pure San people are far from a major component of our population in modern society..
