need to slow down dayton 550 cfm axial

I need to slow down a dayton 550 cfm axial fan. I tried the controller for my vortec can fan but it didn't work. I need something I can buy @ a regular hardware store if possible. I would rip out the controls for a regular fan but I dont have any extra fans and they are hard to find this time of year. Will a light dimmer control work? Please help

A dimmer will work, but don't get a real cheap one. Get one designed for a ceiling fan.

More expensive route, a variable speed controller for a router also works very well.

Yep, made one with a Lutron ceiling fan control for a 747 cfm Vortex, worked like a charm
