Hey I'm new, I'm setting up a 4x8x6.5 tent I need recommendation on a fan and filter set up I'm looking for over kill odor reduction

ive seen home made carbon filters that work well w an in line fan/blower. find some on youtube is my suggestion, also consider negative ion generator, takes up much less space, good luck

Check out a few of the threads on here about fans and scrubbers. Some really useful info!

Good luck!

I have been very happy with the combo of a 6" valueline fan and a 6x20 phat filter. The filter lasted about two years in my 5x5 running constantly and the valueline fan has been running for about four years now without an issue. Sounds like that would be a suitable combo for your tent as well and will only set you back about 200$ with shipping.

Yeah I'm looking at a 6inch filter, ill do some research on phat, I've read can and mountain are phenomenal. does the cfm need to be higher on the filter than the fan for less restriction?

You want to try and have a matched pair for efficiency but I would guess to say a stronger fan would be better then a weaker rated fan for the size of scrubber. If the fan is too high I'm sure you'll just wear out the filter faster, if it's too weak it's not going to scrub the air as much as it should.

Actually, you do not want the fan to be rated higher than the filter cfm. The air has to have enough dwell time in the charcoal to remove odor particles, the more contact time the better. Oversizing the filter gives you much better odor control, which is what you want.

I have had really good luck with Phresh filters the last few years. In a 4x4 tent, I use a 6" fan rated at about 440cfm and a Phresh 6"x24" filter. Overkill for the size of the tent, but I can't have any hint of odor in my situation. It gives me the peace of mind to run some super funky smelling ladies in my garden.

Here is a link to Phresh fiters sizing calculator:

http://www.phreshfilter.com/about/size-selector.aspx

From their faq:

Q: Can I put a higher CFM fan than what the filter list?

A: Not recommended, the max CFM is rated on the filters. If you go over this amount it will not give the passing air enough "contact time" with the carbon and the filter will not be able to do its job as effectively. Further, it will diminish the life of your filter.

Q: What happens if I use a filter larger than what your Phresh® Filter calculator recommends?

A: Nothing other than it will last longer.

For the size tent you were asking about I would go with minimum 6" fan and 6"x24" filter, but I think an 8" fan and an 8"x24" filter would give you plenty of overkill for odor control.

You will also need to take into consideration the amount and type of lighting you plan to use as well.

Hope this helps.

Always go bigger odor control is not sumthin to save on... a tent that size u do not wantto build ur own id go 8in with fan n speed controller. ... u dont want ur fan moving more air then the filter can handle cuz it will move the air faster then the filter is designed to clean it...

i'm with stoney on this one . 8" fan ...... my recommendation is a can fan 8"HO & a can 66 filter with a speedster controller or a titan mercury4 which is a temp controlled fan speed controller . a 4 x 8 is good for 3 600's or 2 1000 watt ballasts & bulbs which to cool in the summer .... your going to need 8" exhaust .

.I went with the 8" MAX fan cuz its smaller, lighter & has more CFM , but its a pricey fan . & you can see my mercury4 up in the top left corner of the bottom pic .

I found out later that the Max fan is finiky when it comes to fan speed controllers & (Thats why all the new ones have built in 3 speed controls right on the fan ) & why i suggested the can fan 8" HO ..... the Max fan will only work with a Variac speed controller , which is real expensive & i have mine blowing on full blast ( no controller ) till i get the variac .

the 8" HO will work with either the speedster or the titan .

like evert said .... get a 8" to 6" reducer & put it on the fan before it blows through the lights .
