Need help upgrading to a DR120 and 1000w HPS

Hey everyone, currently I am running a 400w, but am looking to kick the grow up a notch and get a bigger tent, along with a 1000w hps. I currently cool my 400w with a 4" vortex, which along with ambient room temperature of 74F, heats my DR80 up to 77.7F.

My question is if I upgrade to a DR120(4'x4'), will I be able to keep it cool assuming the same ambient room temperatures as now. I would be using a 6" Elicent inline (which is 309cfm) to cool just the 1000w hps through a 6" cooltube, and a 4"vortex connected to a carbon filter to exchange the tents air, and clean it. Both fans would also be venting out of the room, through no more than 3-6feet of insulated ducting. I will also be using a digital 1000w to help with the ballast heat. Will the elicent be powerful enough, or would i need something like a 6" vortex?

I should have mentioned that noise is somewhat of an issue, which is why I chose the S&P td150. I would just get a 6" vortex, but I am hesitant, since I am unsure if it will be quieter than the S&P when dialed down with a speed controller, while still effectively removing the 1000w's heat.

bump....... for equipment change.
I wont be using the S&P, but will be using a 6 inch elicent instead. Any input would be appreciated.

Seismic, you could do everything with just your Elicent. Doesn't take much airflow to cool your 1000 watt light. Even your 4" fan would be enough to keep that light cool enough. Maybe 5-7F over ambient IMO. Given your short duct run, you could either push or pull through the Cooltube with little difference. My suggestion is to let the air go through filter-fan-cooltube-out. A speed control on the Elicent will allow you to crank it down to quiet the air noise or crank it up to cool the air down. By pushing the air through your cooltube, you avoid drawing hot air over the fan motor.

Thanks for the info pete, I'm glad to hear I probably don't have to buy more fans. :joint:

Glad to help, Seismic. That Elicent 309cfm is a great fan and is actually stronger and more quiet than a 6" Vortex. I saw a test of the two fans in a "tug of war" and the Elicent outpulled the Vortex despite the higher CFM rating of the Vortex. You've already got the Cadillac of fans...don't replace it with a Ford!

Thanks for confirming that pete, as I have heard a few other people on other boards saying the 6" elicent is actually more powerful than the 6" vortex as far as their ability to move the air under situations of higher static pressure.

You should stop by my grow thread in about 1.5 weeks, as the rest of the parts will be in by then for the 1000w setup. Take care dude:joint:

I was setting up a tent, sept its gonna be a growlab145 with a 1000wattsupersun2. I was originally going to go with the Vortex but after reading this thread I'm going to do a little more research on the 6" elicent. If it's cheaper and better than a Vortex why does it seem like everyone uses a vortex?

Also, what type of speed controller are you using with the elicents?

Personally I have not heard how loud the elicent is, since it hasn't arrived yet but from what I have read on this as well as other boards, is that elicents are around 5-10db quieter depending on the model compared to a vortex. Although I am not sure how they compare to a can fan, as I have neither heard one, or researched it.

As far as what speed controller I will use, I am not sure if I will with the elicent. But using the speedster controller on my vortex has proved to work out well, as long as you don't dial it below 60%, because a noticeable hum will start coming from the motor.

For everyone that is interested, all is well with the new setup. The 6" elicent keeps my 1000w hps at 79.5F max, at plant canopy level from 24" away. It is also quieter than my previous setup using two 4" vortex fans, using a muffler on the elicent's intake, and wrapping the fan itself in self adhesive R3 insulation. If you want to see it, drop by my thread in the sig:joint:
