Need advice training plants over 4 feet high!

So...my plants are now in day 14 of flowering and they have stretched to between 4'2" and 4'4" I raised my light all the way to the ceiling, and they have about 16" of space left before they are touching the light. I bought some 4' bamboo rods in an attempt to tie them down a little, but I have no idea where to start. I checked out the training and pruning thread stickied on the top of the forum, but there was nothing specifically about training plants that tall. I was thinking of putting the bamboo rods in either side of the 18 gallon rubbermaid tub I transplanted them into and pulling it side to side like a zig zag shape to lower the top. Any suggestions about doing this. As always, thanks a bunch in advance.

Look into super-cropping. It's a method of bending, but not breaking, which forces branches downward and outward.

As for advice as to how to do it, mine is to stick the bamboo in there, get you some plant tape and DIG INTO IT. Just get started, and it will begin to make sense. You're going to have to get a couple of grows under your belt just for the learning of stuff.

Yeah, this is a bagseed grow and the first grow in my new indoor garden. I have a set of clones that im going to flower next from the bagseed, then Im going to take cuttings from an outdoor plant i successfully revegged for my third grow before I put my good seeds that just germinated into flower. Its all practice now, so Im not too concerned other than I want to be able to make a few bucks to complete my garden. Ill give it a shot, and try my best not to damage these beautiful plants. thanks.

Had the same problem on my first grow with bag seed. I went the zig zag route. Tied to stakes on either side. Worked out well. Gained more than a foot and the plants didn't seem to mind at all.

What I did was I got a hook or screw and hooked it on the rim of my pots. Then I pulled them down like LST idea and tied them to the rim. If you pull the plant down close to breaking it they bend a lot and you will get more bud sites aswell stay safe headband 707:tiphat:

It's a pretty tough plant. I've used weights and string to bend branches and tie tops down with great success.

This is the top cola on a 5 ft. + plant

It grows sideways just fine. Been doing this for some time as opposed to topping to control height.

Super cropping 2 weeks in isnt a great idea IMO unless theres no other option .Tie them back by whatever means.Bend but try not to break .Its alright to treat them like a bitch in veg but in flower treat her like a princess

Tied them down in a counter-clockwise direction around the sides of the rubbermaid bins. I was VERY gentle and lowered one 7 inches and the other 9 inches. That gives them about 2 feet of vertical growth til they reach the light and I doubt thats going to happen. If it does i only tied down in three spots so i can tie down once more but i think im going to leave them alone now. Thanks a bunch!

Jm, I respectfully disagree. I've found I can supercrop all through flower, and often my OD plants supercrop themselves, to no ill effect. I've seen it a couple of times where it almost doubled the size of the buds in the area near the bending.

Ive been scrogging and super cropping for years Its generally not a good idea to stress plants in flower .After the strecth I dont super crop all training is gently done .of course SC lst and scrogg will greatly increase yeild and keep an even canopy .Ive never seen it increase bud size though that comes with keeping an even canopy.I'd also love to see a plant SC itself Crush ,bend ,an rotate on its own?I find that hard to believe.

When the buds get heavy enough the plant indeed supercrops itself. Happens every year on at least a few of my OD plants, even with Hortonova trellis. This year some of them supercropped outside the trellis (branch stuck through, bud got thick, branch bends and over it falls). I don't purposely supercrop my OD plants because I'm not working in a too-little light situation, it's only ever accidental outdoors.

When I supercrop on purpose (indoor growing) my goal is to even up that canopy (auxins and all), and getting more light and a more even canopy for all bud sites seems to accomplish that. After doing my first ScroG, I felt it was a massive pain in the ass and swore to never tie a plant again if I ever could. Not doing well with that, I always have plants that need tying up, but few that need tying down. I've also done LST, and again, find it to be a pain in the ass. I confess to no small degree of laziness.

My advice would be to get the trellis. Make sure the holes in it are ample size. Bend the plants under it. Then cut off growth under the net (working from the bottom up,) don't remove more than a 1/3 of the plant though without giving it time to recover (in the mean time the puff balls will all be aiming up, showing you wich ones won't get light) then repeat 1 more time maybe 5, or 6ish days later.

I have been in this same spot, with the timing and everything. This worked well for me. Another thing is before you bend them, lightly bend them around a bit, wait 15 min. come back, and they will bend under the net much easier.

Just bend them slowly and firmly and they won´t snap. No speed needed, practice on some twigs if you need to. I´ve bent stems quite late into flowering and never had a problem.

I may be wrong but I believe most peeps dont want there buds falling over and crushing the stem .That by no means is considered SC.Whats the purpose if the plant has to heal itself instead of putting that energy into creating bud...

Even though the consensus is bend dont break,I;ll concede and tell you the same thing I tell my wife Your right ,I'm wrong
