Need advice: inexpensive soil recipe and nute recommendations

I'm about to start my first grow and was looking for an inexpensive soil mix or recipe. I can find almost anything I need locally, as I am in a large city in California.

Also, I was looking to find out what a good nute product would be to go with the soil recipe.

I was going to go straight Coco but the nutes are way too expensive for me. $100 for Canna A and B to last 1 grow. :(

I don't care if it is organic, purely synthetic, soil or soilless. Inexpensive, simple and effective is the order of the day!

I have a RO/DI filter from my aquarium days, so I will have 99.9999% pure water to use, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Check out the 'Moonshine Mix' fourm lots of good recipies there.
It's in the organic soil forum it's sticky so it's easy t find.

Lots of people here use Fox Farm Ocean Forest (FFOF) and just add perlite.
Myself i'm currntly using a 50/50 mix of FFOF with Light Warrior( hydro store was out of perlite).
I'm finding the 50/50 mix drains a little too much, great for seedlings, not so much for full mature plants.
Gonna change my mix to about 60/40 when i transplant into bigger pots for flower.
As for nutes that won't break the bank, agian lots of people swear by 'Piece of Mind'.
I myself hav'nt used them, i'm using bat guano(brew as a tea) and Age Old Organics.
But I'm seriosly considering changing to 'Pieice of Mind' as it is a bit cheaper and highly recomended.
Aslo Earth Juice are good nutes, agian highly recomended by growers on this forum.

Yeah I read that but I am going to be scrogging and vegging only for a week or two and I read the moonshine mix was not good for that.

Also it seems a bit expensive. :(

Fox Farms Ocean Forest....add some perlite. No nutes will b needed for approx 3 weeks. Nutes: I use Alaska Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 for veg & molasses. Pure Blend Pro soil mix for flower plus molasses. I'm sure a better nute regimine would produce better results but I'm learning as I go along too. On my 3rd grow now, so I'm def not a guru or anyting but the above simple effort does generate decent results.

One week of veg for scrog? Is that to say you have them in veg right now and want to transplant, wait a week and then flower? Would seem like a very short veg time for SCROG otherwise. I would not go cheap with your soil choice. For the first time in four years I had to keep mothers and was lazy and went with my local nursery's organic soil mix...it is running super hot, has an out of control PH problem and has caused all kinds of problems. FFOF is what I would advise. First 3 weeks are bliss and the information about amending it around week 4 is abundant on IC.

Best of Luck,

Germ

I only plan to scrog for 1 week before going to 12/12. I am doing a smaller grow. Of course, if at one week into the grow the plants are still too small I will let them veg longer. :)

Seems like everybody loves the Fox Farm Ocean Forest. I think I'll mix that 50/50 with some chunky perlite and figure out a simple fert routine.

Now to figure out a good fert regimen... from what I've read it doesn't look like I need to fertilize during veg, but what should I do in transition veg-->flower and for flowering?

Thanks!

hi MPL,

if you veg for a week, then you don't have to do much in flowering. Get a good, balanced fertilizer N-P-K 10-30-20 (Readings of main elements) and give it to plants with every watering. Start with 1/3 the recommended dosage and increase as the plant grows.

If you have to vegg for longer period, get 2 types of ferts : the one mentioned and one havier on N (20-15-15) for the first 2 weeks of flowering. This will give the plant Nitrogen for building good bud structure. Switch to the flowering fert (10-30-20) for the rest of flowering.

In both cases, stop feeding 2 - 3 weeks before harvest.

You can get these ferts for 8$ (Miller) each.

Good luck

P.S. this is how i do it and i do scrog as well. Plus, 1 week vegg is never 1 week. Think 2.

Thanks for the advice!

I think I might try the Fox Farms trio fert pack. It's only about $40 and I think it'll last the whole grow.

What would be better, 50/50 FFOF/Chunky Perlite or 50/50 FFOF/Coco Coir?
