Name that pest......

Today I woke up and when I was looking at my plants I noticed this little guy on one of the plants.

I have no idea what it is. It moves rather quickly and it kind of wiggles along when it moves.

If anyone has any idea what this pest is and what I should do about it, your response would be greatly appreciated. :D

Not the best photo in the world, but I think it is an assasin bug. Don't kill him, they are beneficial, they eat aphids and spider mites. I said might....try getting a better photo for a better diagnosis.

Hope this helps,
Seed

Part of the reason the bug doesn't look that good is because the picture is a close up on a leaf of a seedling. That bug is about 1 mm in length.

The plant was just a little bigger than the plant in this picture.

Max is right, what you got is an adult thrip there. Once colonized they are twice as hard to rid yourself of them than mites are because they have two larval stages below the soil where sprays dont work and the adults have a full set of functional wings.

They are much more easy to kill with sprays than mites are though. Just need to repeat to make sure they are dead.

Thanks for all of your help.

I am not quite sure where they came from but I will be sure to get them out of my garden. I think they may have come from the rockwool that I germed them in.

Highly unlikely, the one in the pic is an adult and has a full set of wings. More likely culprit is an open window or the central air system dragged it in.

Thrip....

Notice any "shiny" looking leaf damage? They leave little wiggly shimmery strips where they gnaw along on the leaf.... Only had them once and they were pretty easy to eradicate... They like to live in the little crease where the leaf vein is.... they live on the TOPS of the leaves unlike their heathen cousins...

Thanks for all the replys and the help. I appreciate it.

I have been using some safer soap with limited results, so now I am using
this garden spray.

Unfortunately they have appeared on the larger plants in my veg tent. I won't give up I will keep fighting these little shits until they are completely gone.

Website says that your new spray contains pyrethrins, which are natural, and canola oil. Let us know how that canola oil reacts with the plants. Did it burn?

dude, if you want to get rid of them easy, just get yourself some diatomaceaos earth... its available at most garden centers, totally inert and its a mechanical insecticde, so the buggers cannot get used to it. cover the leaves and lay a thick layer on the soil. no more problems!

Srpoutco - Unfortunately it did burn the plants. Not too bad, but I figure if it gets rid of the little buggers than it is worth it.

Jonnybgood - That stuff sounds good but I am using a hydro system with hydroton pebbles so would it still work on the pebbles?

Looks a new bug joined the crowd here in my grow room......yay....whoopie. :badday:

A little closer

Now, I just need to figure out if it is a good bug or a bad bug. It didn't look like it was hurting the plant. If anyone knows, please chime in.

I think it could be a soldier bug, but I am not sure.
