My plants aren't growing.

I have 2 seedlings in a pit in the ground - about 2 feet deep - which I filled with potting soil. Problem is they aren't growing. The potting soil is about 4-5 inches below ground level because the soil compressed over time a little - this is why I think they aren't growing....the walls of the pit are keeping the seedlings from the sunlight.

Am I correct? or is there some other problem?

Depending on where you live it not be the right time. Or they will just take a lot longer to grow and grow slowly untill it is the right time. I am on the west coast and have some outside that are flowering very poorly cause its too late some from seed are very short and strong.Wait a couple months to start anything. The seeds took like two weeks just to sprout.Good Luck

Plants need light, water and good air circulation to grow.

If they are too low and not getting enough light, they compensate by elongation of the stem until they do find light. If that were happening, you would be describing long spindly plants.

It sounds like a root stress problem. If the seedlings can not get established due to poor conditions, growth will stop.

I just had a seedling batch showing that problem myself. I reused planter mix and they were not happy with it. A transpant into fresh planter mix fixed them right up.

Is there anything else that blocks the light other than the ground being uneven? I like starting them in small pots before throwing them into the ground. Anyway Good Luck.

I think I'm gonna plant some more in a bucket later. But if I were to transplant them how would I go about doing that without killing them? do I take the whole plant out and shake off the dirt and replant? or do I dig around it and pull that out and replant that?

Put you're seedlings in small plastic solo cups or the bio-degradable peat cups and put under a good set of flouro tubes or compact floro for about 2weeks..let them root out those little containers. Then transplant...either cut away the container or gently tip over until the whole root ball comes out clean.Move up to 1/2 gal or 1 gal container for a couple more weeks..by then you should have a plant, healthy enough for outdoors..Always remember to harden off..place in a shaded area for about a week..before going into full sunlight....Good Lck!!

Transplanting seedlings is simple because they don't have a well developed root system.

Carefully, using a trowel or similar tool, dig out the soil surrounding the seedling. A small amount of soil will stay with the root ball, that is fine.

Select and partially fill a suitable container. Place the root ball into the fresh soil and back fill around the root ball. When your finished, water it well to let the roots find their new home. You should see new growth within a week.

I should point out, your plants will begin to flower right away because the nights are still longer then the days. You can expect them to be finished in early May.

They will not get very big, my overwinter plants yielded a couple of grams each.

they've been in there for about a month and they're only showing those first 2 leaves. I'm pretty much giving up on them....I'm going to plant some in some solo cups then transplant them to buckets which I will bury in the ground up to the lid and leave about an inch or two of the bucket up out of the ground so it doesn't flood.

Next time I go to the growsite I'll try and transplant them but I don't know if it'll do anything. (they're only shwag seeds anyway...no big deal)

sounds shitty.. a month? Did you pack the soil down when you planted them? is the soil any good? have you been fertalizing them? I dunno what to say man I guess if I was in your position i would either just start some new ones or I would transplant the seedlings into a new location, its pretty easy because they dont have big dangley roots yet.
