my new DIY aerocloner ... any tips???

hey guys, just wanted to drop in and show off the cloner i've been building all day long. It was extremely easy to build, just a little tedious with drilling all the holes and all that. all parts were purchased from lowes except for the 2 295 gph pumps which i had laying around. if anyone out there has one of these tell me what you use for colars, these colars are made from pipe insulation, the holes are 1 inch in daimeter. I feel that the stem would be just a tad bit too snug in there but how would i know, never used one of these things before. Any other advice regarding these things will be greatly appreciated, thanks for looking... oh yea, i don't know how to make the pics show up on the post so here are the links.

Whatever you do, DON'T use the foam you have shown to hold the clones! It is too porous and will retain moisture causing the clones to root into it. Then you will have to rip out roots to get it off. I found this foam pool noodle at K-mart that was about 1" thick by 6" wide by 4' long. Use a sharpie and a cup to draw circles on it then cut with razor blade. These work great! I've had clones in my cloner for storage for over 5 months with no problems. I tried the type of foam you have and trust me, get rid of it!

i'm sorry... can you describe a little better what you do with the noodle, what do you mean 1 inch thick?? usually on a tubular shape it's only diameter and length. how big are your holes? mine are 1 inch in diameter. what do you do to prepare your clones? you know, everyone always warns about the air bubble getting into the stem, but with an aero cloner there would be no way to stop it since it's hanging in the air right? anyway, thanks for your input

Most pool noodles are round but they are now making them in all kinds of shapes. I was going to get the round ones when I saw the flat ones (1"thick by 6" wide by 4" long)...man it worked good. My holes are 1-1/4" but 1" will be fine. Just use a smaller circle templet. Make sure to cut them a bit larger than the holes in your lid. Then you can drill a hole in the center then make a slit from the center hole to the outside so you can get your clones out.
I tried an aero system but found it to be no more effecive than a DWC so why worry about a system that will kill ALL your clones if the power goes off for a day.
Methods of preparing clones are kind of a personal preferance. I just cut the clone off of the mother at a 45deg angle and stick it in one of the holes in my cloner making sure about an inch comes out the other side. In a DWC cloner, make sure that the stem is under the water a little or it will not be as effective. Once roots form, you can just let the water level lower naturally or keep it the same. I am sorry, but my aero system didn't use spriklers or anything like that; just 1/6" holes in the pipes so air bubbles didn't matter so I can't tell you if bubbles will mater in your system.

I found 2" neoprene collars at a local hydro store, same thing thats on the EZ cloner. I picked up 10 of em, will be doing a little cloner sometime soon. Nice job, btw.

nice job, I just upgraded my homemade one to have twice the plant sites, used foam discs instaed of the correx and twice the spinners(i went for spinners as opposed to misters, but will be building a mister one in the future,- i have to try everything lol.) Ill put a couple of pics of the upgrade into the build thread which is either in this forum or in hydro i think.... great job with this mate

Harry, I just got done looling at your design also. Well done guys. Is Fuzzy using the Mister Micro jets? He installed a lot of heads in there!. Think it necessary to have so many? I plan to construct an aero and wick cloner for a friend . Any OPs on mister type and number would be appreciated.

actually, now ive enlarged the pics above, they appear like spinners too, they appear a lot smaller than what ive used but id imagine these are specific hydroponic ones where mine are "Gardena" Brand irrigation micro spinklers for the garden....
Cracker, Personally, I would say that so many isnt strictly required, but , having all of these wont do any harm and if some get clogged(which if truth be told is unlikely if you only use plain ph'd water in it) then you will still get 100% coverage safety in numbers. This is partially why i added 2 extra sprayers in mine, 1 more would have given better coverage but 2 more means one spare sort of.

hey guys thanks for the compliments. so you know those are not special spinners, they were purchased at lowes in the irrigation isle. these super stores really have alot more then we think. as far as the number of spinners go.. no rhyme or reason really, just tried to use them all up, probably too many but is there such a thing?? cracker : not sure about the distance of the spinners, i'll find out for you in the next couple of days.

What about using styrofoam cones with a small bit cut off the bottom?
Cut a slit down the side with a razorblade so you can open them up without destroying them.
They should self center pretty good too
