My new Cabinet project, looking for advice.

Hi guys!

I'm building a new cabinet for my basement and wanted to run my design by the pros here at IC. I think I have everything worked out the way i want it, I just want to make sure I have everything covered. This is my first Cabinet, I have been a closet grower for years but with my (Finally!) new basement I want a bit bigger of a space to play in! I am a former carpenter and total DIY junkie, I have been building things since I was old enough to hold a hammer. Here's the run down so far:

-3.5 feet X 3.5 feet X 7 feet tall ---> I wanted to stick as close to 50 W/Sq foot as possible and only use one light.
-I bought a 600 Watt Lumatek Digital Ballast with a Hortilux Bulb, I'll be running it in a Silverstar air-cooled hood. Ballast will be mounted outside the cabinet.
-Fan is a 6" Vortex (449 CFM) with a speed controler, Scrubber is a Can-Filter 50 / 38 Special (420 CFM). Air intake is through the filter, through the hood, then to the fan. The fan is going to be mounted outside the cabinet.
-I have painted the interior Flat white, I have used Mylar in the past but hate working with it!!
-I have a digital thermometer for the interior temp and humidity, speed controller for the fan, good grounded timer for the HPS, everything plugs into GFI plugs that are wired to their own breaker in my panel. Extra plugs both inside and outside the cab for eveything, also have a couple regular fans inside the cab to keep air moving nicely.
-I am going with a passive style intake, I am still wondering on what size I should make it?
-My floor and the first 3 inches all the way around are galvanized sheet metal, all seams have been caulked and sealed. I have a drain in the center that drains right to my sewer. I am growing in soil and my reasoning for this was so that any overflow from watering just goes right down the drain and I can clean out my cab quite easily as well.

The strains I have for my first few grows are Female Seeds Ice and Skunk Special (I loved Mr Wags threads on these!) also some Calizahr from Chimera and my SB freebies, some MOD Godbud x Dreamweavers.

Nute wise I am going to be using Fox Farm liquid ferts, with some liquid Karma and a few other organic products. I am still figuring out my soil mix, I want something healthy and organic that won't dry out too fast on me. So far I have been looking at a mix of the Promix with Mycorise (sp?), worm castings and perlite. I would like to use some of the Fox Farm soils like the light warrior, ocean forest, happy frog, etc but I cannot find anywhere in Canada that sells them!

Anyways, this is the point I am at, I have about half my gear, and my cab is already designed and figured down to the last screw (former carpenter, compulsive about details :p ) My beans are waiting patiently in my fridge! I am looking to finish construction and fire this thing up in early october once the busy season at work dies down. Anyone have any other advice or see anything I should be doing differently? Once I begin construction on the cab itself (Mid-september) I am going to do a whopping start to finish pictorial and then of course the mandatory grow diary. Thanks guys, I look forward to hearing back from you!

Sheesh dude, sounds to me like you know what you're doing to the extent that we should be asking you for advice, hehehe! :chin:

Actually, there was one little thing that I spotted..........you said you caulked & sealed the seams of your galvanized sheet metal. Now, I've worked with metals for about 20 years and I was wondering if you used caulk that will stick to galvanized metal.......(if I'm reading your post correctly)? It probably would be better to solder the seams of the metal using a small torch, IMHO. :chin:

Good luck with your project & grow.

I think you may be better off to use an epoxy sealant rather than gavanized steel.

"On the other hand, galvanized steel, while resistant to oxidation for many years, will ultimately rust over time, which might be a factor in your application."

From: http://www.emwhouston.com/galvanized_dampers.htm

Sorry it doesn't give more info and I'd search more but I have work in 5 hrs and need some rest.
I'm sure you could find more info, but I know you can find epoxies that cure to an inert state.

Also, Galvanization consists of plating a metal with a Zinc coating, which may or may not affect the plants if the roots/runoff get to it. I'm not saying you definitly will see Zinc toxicity in your plants or cause lockout, but I do feel you'd be better off using something inert to seal the floor rather than run into any problems mid grow after your invest all the time and care it takes to build this cab and grow out some plants.

Just had another thought for ya......
You might want to cap your drain some way when not in use. Otherwise you might risk drawing out sewer gasses with your ventilation system. Could, if nothing else, make for some rather stinky weed!!! :chin: .............and not be very healthy or be flamable (methane?) with hot lights.
