My little seedlings is this normal !? ak-47

Hey !!

sadly I dont have any pictures since well the lack of camera, I planted 5 seeds 4 days ago and the seeds have already gotten quite well going.. well aside from one

I germinated them in a paper towel, but I think I could have waited longer untill I put them in the pots, I germinated for I think around 30 hours and the seeds were cracked and little roots showing but they werent reaching out much.

I have just kept them at my window so far, 4 have gotten quite big but one is not showing any signs of life, I dug it up very gently to see what was going on and it seems I have managed to break off the root from the seed :(:( I have no idea where the seed went, the root was just sitting there alone so I think that one is pretty much done for.

But anyway the point to this thread is that the seedlings so far are freaking massive ! I mean they are like 1.5 inches up in the air already with those super tiny little first set of leaves and tiiiiiiny little fanleafs coming out of those, is it normal for the plant to strech this much before even getting the first set of leaves ?

I just now about an hour ago put them into their little grow room where they have a 250w cfl a few inches above them, Im hoping they dont strech out too much and become weak so is this streching normal !?

also how can I deal with humidity in a small grow room on small budget ? and what is a good humidity level for my little babys ?, its currently at around 35% which I know is too low, I put a small towel into a glass of water in with the plants to hope to rais it a little, any other tips or tricks that work good ?

Thank you all !!

You should have put the little ones under the light as soon as they popped. You can support then it they get really top heavy now that they're under light.

Anyway...these are some of mine from a previous grow 10 days since popping up out of the ground. The little guy is 2-3 days.

A CFL and most FL lights can get really close. I have the regular daylight spectrum 23W CFL's lighting these guys. The light is 1-2" from the leaves.

They shouldn't stretch at all if the light is good.

Good luck!

Stretch is most often caused by low levels of light. Plants don't know much but, they know where the good light is and will do whatever it takes to get there including damaging themselves. Get the light on top of them and they wont go searching.

If you feel plants are too stretched out, simply plant them lower. Growth will stall for a week or two as new roots sprout towards the surface. When this happens to me with my rockwool cubes, I simply roll the stem around the cube and replant.

Ahh that makes a lot of sense !!!

I was worried if I put them under the light too soon they might get "damaged by the extreme light but I guess that was very silly considdering it is their way of life :p

they are very close to the light now, not so close that they are getting heat from it but close enough so they are bathed in the light so hoping they will stop streching so much !! gonna repot them into their final and "bigger pots" this weekend so will dig some of the extra stem in the soil !

Thanks a lot for the tips !

Any good advice on the humidity ? I managed to raise it up to 38% now by adding 2 bowls of water with small towels in them, but I want it to be atleast above 50% !

try rolling up a newspaper and stick it in a cup of water, newsprint evaporates water faster than a cotton towel.

just change the water and newspaper every other day.

if you have a fan in your closet make sure the newspaper is getting a little of the breeze.
