My first grow

I started growing around early September, after my cannabis card arrived. I had about a dozen seeds that had come out of different strains of bud and most were planted outside. After they sprouted, I transferred them to a pot inside. Then, when they were bigger, I put them in their own pots. I can't really give specifics, as I'm too new to remember the stuff... I used this top shelf soil for the lower layer. A hydro shop near me recommended it. So, the bottom half is $30 per bag soil and the top half is $10 per bag soil. I used 3 splitters and have 4 large fluorescent bulbs hanging about 1 foot above the grow. 2 are 200 watt bulbs and the other two I think are 100 watt bulbs. They are growing in a small closet. The timer is set for 18 hours of light. I open the closet door in the morning and evening after work to provide some air exchange. My question is, judging by their size and/or age, should I be doing anything differently yet? I was going to wait until they get bigger and then transplant to 3 gallon size pots, using the $30 per bag soil to surround it.

looks like yr doin fine to me!

leave the pictured plants for a while yet before you transplant because you need a somewhat decent root ball to hold the soil together when you take them from the pot.

that one on the right of pic looks like a dud to me ... I mean a waste of time considering what you'll get from it in the end.

in any case this is a GOOD start ... and seeing as the learning is in the doing ... keep on doing!

cheers ...

Your plants look like they are doing well. May want to put a small fan in there to keep the air moving during the day when you are not there.

I will have to take a pic of the bag of soil that cost so much. I was told not to use it for seedlings, as it would burn the roots. I will elevate the 2 smallest plants. My son was telling me that they're probably small because they're probably a different strain. Like, I either have 4 sativa and 2 indica plants or the other way around. Will having a fan in a closed closet do much good? It's not exchanging any air; just swishing it around, right?

Might wanna get those cfl's a little closer. I keep mine about 1-4 inches away. Those are higher wattage cfl's, but I think a foot may be a little too far.

And yes a fan to swish air around will be very beneficial. and eventually you are going to need a way to exchange fresh air into the closet.

I did lower the lights down until they were an inch from the tallest plant last night. I'll pick up a small fan this weekend. Maybe put it on the floor, facing the plants, so when the closet door is shut, it will pull fresh air from underneath the door perhaps?

assuming the landlord permits: you could put a series of inch holes horizontally across the bottom and across the top and there will be air flow then WITHOUT a fan ... altho a fan's best.

cheers!

Or find a door to fit your closet (when I did my one and only closet grow I found one on Craigslist) cut your air hole, mount your fans and light traps, take the original door off the hinges and use the modified one. That way you can vent the closet without damaging the place your renting, just put the original door back on when you move out and it's like it never happened :)

Looking good! They will look even better after a week or so with those lights down close to the tops. I'll check back in after a week or so... Keep up the good work!
