My CannaOil is almost BLACK!

I made cannoil yesterday...I used oil th@ had been steeped in buds/stems/leaves etc...for a couple of months...I put it into a slow cooker with water and as much bud/leaf and small stems as I could comfortably fit into the 4L crock...
Gentle simmer for 9-11 hrs...

I have strained it....frozen most of the water and removed it...

The last of it will be allowed to sit and separate before removing the water th@ remains...

However...the oil is almost BLACK!...it was a golden canola oil before....the bud was dried but not water cured...

Have I got contaminants?...a shitload of clorafil?...or a REALLY strong batch of canna oil?

advice welcomed!

I think maybe you left it in the oil for to long. I saw a tech on here somewhere where the weed and oil were put together in the crock on low for 24 hours, no water. I'm gonna try this tonight, kinda tired of budder.

Should be fine, have you smoked or ate any? I am assuming this is for cooking? Get some french bread, toast/grill it, drizzle some oil, put some chopped basil and tomatoes on it, a sprinkle of garlic salt and see how it tastes. I usually add some fresh Mozzarella or evenb goat cheese and broil it for a few.

Thanks for the reply guys....

The oil is NOT burnt...it was in a slow cooker with water...no burnt smell or taste...

I used some of it, mixed with vitamin E and beeswax...and made a balm.
Used it last night.
Works like a charm! :)

The oil is green but so dark th@ in a jar it looks black.

TT...gonna try something like your suggestion today...

removing plant matter, letting the oil/water separate and then freezing it so I can pour off the oil.

Give me a day and I will post some pics to show the colour.

I used A LOT of bud and leaf and stem...so I think it will kick arse!...will let you guys know tomorrow.

Ahh, I make that balm too. Great for joint pain. I add camphor and use tea tree oil instead of Vit. E. I also (when I have it) use dried roots from my hydro mom after I trim her roots and dry them.

I'm VERY interested in the roots thing!....I happen to have about 6 rootballs dried or drying...do you really notice a difference with using roots?...I was thinking of redoing my cannaoil with roots also to enhance it...

I add some caster oil because it is so very easily absorbed into the skin...was thinking of trying a balm th@ was mostly cannacasteroil...see if it works faster....

Just spitballin'...but if roots are so useful...could someone start some type of compassion club where cleaned roots and rootballs are sent in to be processed for meds?...who can identify roots?...should be safe...wh@ we need is @least 1 place on each continent to process these...

When I've made oils in the past, I was starting to think there's a genetic component to the final color. Some harsh smoking, expanding 'hashplant' strains will make a very dark (green, almost black) color. Maybe it's the chlorophyll, I donno. I doubt that roots would contribute much as the THC is manufactured up on the trichomes, not the roots.

I started using mj canola oil for brownies insteada butter because I found oil to be easier to work with and more versatile.

I use canola oil to soak my vaped up herb I set aside after vaping just to soak in canola oil for brownies. I'll explain what I do and I get the same evil black canola oil u got ;)

I use the ghiradelli double chocolate brownie mix that asks for a 1/3 cup of oil. what i do is take my used vaped up herb and put it in a glass measurng cup with a lil over half a cup of canola oil, wrap it with foil and cook in the oven on bout 150 overnight. Remove foil and stir mixture of oil and revape then strain into another glass or ceramic cup. The oil will be a lil black but now I add fresh revape to the dark oil to soak again on 150 overnight. what I am doing is reducing the oil and making it more potent. I started with half a cup of canola but after soaking in revape twice the oil has reduced down to bout a 1/3 of a cup, exactly what the box calls for, and the oil is so black that when u hold the measuring cup up to sunlight you can't see a single ray of light thru the oil, it's perfect.

If you have a lot of leaf it makes more sense to make bubble hash out of it then put the hash thats not the best for smoking(the second rinse of the leaves for example) into the oil thats done reducing to make it a lot more potent. The hash dissolves beautifully in warm oil and it makes brownies that u feel after just one bite. My galpals take a bag o brownies with them on planes to make the trip more enjoyable. hope this helps a lil, peace, BL

Yummy!...
But no stone....and no noticable abatement in my epilepsy/spasticity/bone aches...

I may not have had enough...or perhaps I should heat the oil in the oven as you do and activate the thc th@ is obviously there...

Will report back with results..

UPDATE!...I made the brownies with 130 ml of cannaoil...

divided into 16...

2 helps me get off to sleep if I try, but no effect otherwise...

4-6....is the titration limit....

No head stone....though some greater clarity of thought { I suffer from MS...among other things...so clarity of thought is good!} though not extremely so...

A noticeable relaxation of twitching and spasms and an almost total abatement of Grand Mal's and the ever present Petite Mal's!

My balance is usually always bad....now it is more stable...BUT IT IS OFF KILTER BE ABOUT 40 DEGREES! lmao!...I have to keep self adjusting...or do wh@ I'm gonna do now....sit in a lounge chair with winged sides to sprawl drooling and comatose , playing PS2...Ghostbusters, starwars racers revenge and MOH European assault! ;)

Here's the most straight forward method I've found for making cannaoil. I've used it dozens of times and it's never failed. Start with a 9 or 10 inch saucepan and an equal cup to ounce ratio of oil to weed. (1/2 oz ground or abv bud to 1/2 cup canola oil) Make sure the material is ground but not powdered, you want to expose the maximum surface area to the oil. heat the oil over very low heat ( 180 - 200 F ) The determining factor being that you don't want the oil to boil. Keep the heat to the point where tiny bubbles occasionally rise to the surface but most of the mix stays clear.

Let this mix cook for at least 2 hours (some people go a lot longer but I never noticed much difference past 4 hours) stirring or shaking the pan every half hour or so.

WARNING: There is a fair amount of odor involved, less than burning a fat one but if smell is an issue, take the usual precautions

Next, I use a cheesecloth bag (the kind used for kava extraction work great) and suspend it about half way down in a large measuring cup and pour the hot mixture the bag using a good rubber spatula to scrape all the oil out of the pan. Wait until the mix cools enough to handle and squeeze the hell out of the bag to get every last drop of oil out.
(Let your girl or guy lick your hand off later for a cheap thrill)

A note on potency: Using mid quality weed or HQ trimmings for the process, this half a cup of oil used in a Dunkin Hines brownie mix will yield roughly 20 brownies. One of these should put you in low earth orbit for 4 or 5 hours. You can also bottle the stuff and take it a teaspoon at a time. Experiment to find your ideal parameters but wait at least 1 1/2 hours after first ingesting to bump it up.........too much and you'll just go to sleep.

Note on color: I've used different oils and different weed and had final oil color that ranged from mid emerald to a green so dark as to be black and never noticed any correlation between potency and color.

Personal note: Through 30+ years of cannabis use, power hitters to vaporizers, this is my favorite way to ingest the sacred weed. No cough, great medicinal value and great for situations when you can't get away to burn.......and fun to write on too.

I agree with what Excess said in regards to the length of time on heat, I also dont notice much of a difference over 4 hours. Also agree about the variance of colour and how it usually does not correlate to potency.

Sounds like you've got a lot of relatively water soluble contaminants. I use a water wash in a funnel to remove them from mine. Link is in the sig.
 
Even with a water wash it probably won't get much lighter. I use virtually the same process a geopolitical (thanks for the great thread by the way!) but a little dumbed down.

Instead of the fancy science equipment that I can't find around I just cut off the bottom of a 2 liter bottle, put a water bottle top on it and flip it over to do my water washes.

I let trim soak in peanut oil for a long time, sometimes days, don't really think about it to be honest, on LOW for the first 12 hours and then warm for the remaining time.

It comes out black when bottled, when the bottled is moved and the oil coats the side its a deep green. It's potent as hell and tastes great as well. Peanut oil supposedly has better absorbs better but has a lower smoke point so I wouldn't mess with any stove top method for it.

After that I put the oil on the stove top, mix with water and heat it slowly, let stay heated for 10 minutes, let cool till warm, drain water, cool, repeat till satisfied.

I don't use cheesecloth they are pretty annoying and catch a lot of material. I prefer Jelly Bags, which are pretty much the same as the nylon in that thread.

still haven't been able to track down a potato ricer so for now it's just brute strength to get the oil out.



I've since moved on to tinker with food grade bubble to make the best edibles though, still not satisfied till i find something that can make you go intergalatic.
