MUFFLER WORTH IT?

L

luvgrowing

is a muffler worth the $80 does it reduce the perceived noise by 50% like they state?

My box has a Vortex 172 CFM and sounds like a house fan on low.

If I put the humidifier next to it then you can't hear it.

Also I haven't tried insulated duct.

Please let me know your thoughts fellas.

Thanks!

do you have a certain muffler in mind? i built one for my grow and ended up not using it because it took up to much room in my Micro dresser cab. I did however hook it up. it was a lil to small for the amount of air i was pushing but it did get rid of the noise and you couldnt hear the air movement any more. ill post a pic in a few

cool thanks sticky!! yeah I have this one in mind http://cgi.ebay.com/Fantech-Duct-Si...ptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 because it's 4" diam. and that's my fan and filter opening as well.

Also what's the best way to hook these things up? I heard leaving 3-4' of insulated duct on each side of it so fan-3'duct-muffler-3'duct-filter? or

3' duct-muffler- 3' duct- fan/filter

if i were going to remake it and had the room... i would make it twice as long for better sound deading. it is a 4" to 6" reducer with a 6" duct that measures 9" long. the inside has mesh wire that is wrapped to fit inside the 4" duct area. then it is stuffed with batting before the top 4x6 is installed and just duct taped it closed. I might do a DIY later tonight

That 67$ + 10$ shipping is killer. i bet you could make 2 for that price!

Yes it's worth it. 50% audible difference is realistic. In addition you could put your fan in an insulated box, that should also make the system noticeably quieter.

If you want you can make your own from fiberglass pipe insulation. A particle filter in the exhaust with a simple DIY one would be good though as some glass fibers may be dislodged.

Hook it up like this: carbon filter->fan->muffler

The fan should be connected to the other stuff with flexible connections so there is no direct metal-to-metal contact. They have special clamps with foam rubber inner lining for that if you can find them. They reduce vibration(=noise) transfer from the fan to the rigid muffler and filter.

Cool thanks guys,

Do you think that insulated duct will help as well as the muffler? or rigid is better for that?
I have regular flexible duct hooked up now.

Sticky,

Very nice stealthy dresser!!!

Speed control it with a Variac. Reducing the speed by as little as 10% will noticeably reduce noise.

btw, this Variac is cheaper than a muffler: http://webtronics.stores.yahoo.net/ensavat.html

I tried the Speedster Fan Speed Control but it make a humming noise when turned down. Does this happen with all speed controls?

The reason why i suggested you a Variac (auto-transformer) is because it doesn't cause a humming noise. Variac's work differently than triac-based controllers like a speedster. Instead of chopping the sine wave, which creates electrical noise, a Variac simply alters the amplitude. Worth each and every penny, imho.

getting one of these as we speak!!! that's a lot pontiac that's what I wanted to make sure prior to ordering.

Don't know I'd claim 50% but, felt I got better than the 30% the DIY tutorial promised.

If stealth is a concern, it WONT be enough. Consider speed controls, isolation chambers and insulated ducting. With all 4 combined, my Elicent (far quieter than your Vortex) could be heard across the street at my neighbors door. BUT only with my garage door open. Closed, the sound stayed inside. It just meant that no one was allowed in the garage any more.

If you can't get the fan out of the room (say, the attic) then lock the door. Anyone in the room will know it's running.

hang your fan /filter by bungy cords from eye screws. i think it cut my noise by 30-40%. i only wish it worked as well with my ai rpump

hey Freezerboy,

yeah I agree with your post saying that it's never trully stealth as silent would be. My dehumidifier sounds lounder like yours sounds like an old freezer. Mine is by the boiler room in the basement, so when the boiler kicks in I can't hear it, but still it bothers me that I can here it when not putting something like a movie on to hide the sound.

They need to come out with a silent fan! how much lower is the Elicent?

Model for model 5-10 dB. Some would say it's because Vortex models move more air but, the result is the same; more noise.

My only garage visitor during the debacle (one of only two who know about the grow) took less than 3 seconds to scrunch his face and ask, "What the HELL is that noise?" They can be tamed and/or masked, I just want people to know what they're getting into so they can avoid flushing $200+ down the drain as I did.

Here's DurbanPoison's DIY tutorial

..... add .....

D'oh! That's a scrubber. Try Muffler DIY by Kovenant for muffler.

last night I bought insulated duct and hooked it up.
I couldn't believe the difference!! from 5' away I can't hear it at all.
In fact now when the TV is on in the room you can't hear it with regular volume on.
It's really surprised me. I would say a difference of 50% less noise just from that duct, now I wonder if I add a muffler would it be even better although I can deal with it now.

are you running the insulated ducting straight from a reflector? I only ask because I have thought about switching to it but want to stay away from any chance for fires.

I do have mufflers and I believe it makes a difference. I would not buy one though, I would definitely make it. even the ones you buy are put together exactly the same way you could it it with some time in lowes. i bought two from a hydrostore and put all the parts together to make one in lowes and it is definetly an easy rated diy project. peace and smoke

For a 4" fan, should I go for 4" or 5"insulated ducting? Will the 5" reduce more airflow noise
than the 4"? (Slower air movement with the 5")

Is there a big difference between a 2' muffler and a 3' one?

Muffler A (2'/60cm) has 5cm rockwool (insulation) - cost = $55
Muffler B (2'/60cm) has 10cm rockwool (insulation) - cost = $83
Is it worth going for muffler B or is the difference in noise reduction small?
