Moving West ?

So, our lease is up July 1st. and the girlfriend has been pushing the idea of putting everything we need into the back of the car and heading West.

I'm wondering where would you choose to move to, and why ???

Kootenays, the Island, Van,???

Is BC even Mecca, or are there better places to aim for ?

Vancouver is infested with cops and gangs and rent is astronomical.
never spent much time on the island but it looks and sounds great.
the koots are my favorite. big rugged mountains,like-minded people, not much of an apparent police presence as the lower mainland, more rural areas at affordable prices, and i just got good vibes there man.

The cost of living in BC is excessive to say the least. Gasoline is 10 cents more per litre right off the bat!

Want lots of work out west... Saskatchewan is booming. But the climate is hard and the scenery aweful!

New Bruinswick has a slow economy, lower standard of living but the cliamate and culture is wonderful (very similar to bc).

I've heard growing in NB is pretty successful.

Hoots, I have lived in all the places you mentioned in BC, have lived here 35+yrs, moved from Ontario and never looked back.

I like the West Kootenays lived in Nelson BC, mix of hippy-like, eco type and well-to-do people. Clean air and good water. Not a lot of choices for work, but it sure is a nice place. Like most of BC it offers a number of outdoor activities. I like the blend of people that live here, back to the land types. Lots of snow in the winter and sunny summers

I lived on Vancouver Island and one of the more northern smaller Islands(3mi.X6mi.). Living on Vancouver Island is great if you like living on an Island. It's not as cold as the Okanagan or the Kootenays in general during the winter nor as hot during the summer. I like the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino and Bamfield both are small places, but the nature is absolutely incredible. In Bamfield I ordered pizza and it was delivered by boat LOL. Most of the population is on the south end of the island, best choices for work.

Vancouver is very expensive, lots of people, busy busy place, lots to do. However, there are a number of smaller cities outside of Vancouver that are worth looking at . The closer to the Ocean the closer to the rain. Much more choice for work and better paying jobs, if you don't mind the hustle and bustle of big city life.

I like the Okanagan/Similkameen, have lived around the area, including small rural towns and larger cities. I like the weather, water for outdoor activities, good hiking, and can grow a good vegetable garden. I like living in smaller places but a city is never far away. It is always easy to get a low paying job but higher paying work can be found. If you have a trade you can do OK. It gets pretty hot in the summer where I live, from the mid to high 30Cs and sometimes up to 40C. Cold in the winter -12C-18C with as low as -25C but not often.
This is my favourite place to live.

By the way BC stands for "bring cash". It can be expensive to live here.

vancouver is nice, the surrounding communities are ok.
I'd recommend Squamish, it's between vancouver and whistler. easy to drive to van just as fast as coming in from Surrey which is right beside vancouver as well. In Squamish you'll have peace and quiet with the best ski resort, fishing, hiking, rivers, lakes, mountains... the world has to offer. Plus you'll be beside a world class city, 30 to 45 minutes from all the best.

From what I've seen, the rent seems pretty reasonable in Grand Forks, Rossland, and Nelson, but Jobs look pretty rare. Maybe they just don't post them on the internet, or I'm not looking in the right spots.

I'm from Alberta, but we live in Quebec now. It's beautiful here, but the language has me hogtied. English jobs are pretty rare.

Hoots, I lived in and around Grand Forks(GF) area(Greenwood, Midway and Christiana Lake) for better than 15 years. Yes, it is cheaper to live there than a lot of places, but finding work can be difficult. I did manage to stay employed but not always doing work I enjoyed. Christina Lake is a lot of fun during the summer, 20 min. out of GF. There are a number of small mountain lakes that are good for camping and fishing. Two rivers flow through GF. The nearest city is a few hours away from GF, GF is a border town. The Mayor of GF Brian Taylor, well, he is a marijuna friendly soul, google him.

If I ever moved again, I would think about going to Nelson. I went to college there and liked the place a lot. It's bigger than Grand Forks with more opportunity.
