Start off with the 600 about 24-30 inches above the plant. Reduce its height daily until its about 12-18 inches above the plant depending on temps. A handy rule is put your palm on the top of the plant. if your hand feels uncomfortably warm, the lamp is too close. Hope this helps. good luck

Stinkyigloo said it perfectly. I am currently running a 400W and could get my girls withing a few inches without burns but eventually I didn't want to have to worry about burns. So I air cooled the hood. If you do not have a hood or cool tube, you should invest in one. Controlling the heat from my light is one of the best things I have done so far.

If you possibly can and there is room, leave the CFL's in the room also. HPS and the vegging spectrum compliment each other, veg lights have enough red to trigger plant response but being heavy on blue to feeds the other half of the chlorophyll ignored by the HPS. Both chlorophyll's used by the plant are single molecules with twin absorption peaks, feeding both halves makes the plant more energy efficient.
But everything really depends on all those variables of the grow I know nothing about.

Home Depot or Lowe's have remote sending thermometers that can be hung on a string in the canopy, $15. For an extra $10 it will keep a 24 hour running hi/lo temp & humidity record and whether it is currently going up or down. Warm hands work, this works all day and all night.

Consider moving plants under the big lamp at "noon". This way their first exposure to the big lamp is only half a day followed by a good nights sleep. Hang lamp high, lower over the course of a week.
