Mothers in soil....

I have a question....I want to keep mothers in pots(5G). How often should i re-pot them or is it just better to keep them in hydro? Right now they are in soil and we do not want to move them into hydro for fear of losing them. We took 2 clones and to try them in hydro but I want to know how much work it would be to keep them in soil. What kind of problems are there with being rootbound? Do you trim roots and re-pot? Any info is as always appreciated. TIA.

My suggestion would be to move them into gradually larger pots (2gal, 5gal, etc). This will give them the best root ball. You can trim the roots but make sure that whever you use is VERY VERY sharp, other wise you will kill them. If you want to keep some moms in hydro then just take some cuts from the moms you got in dirt now and put them in hydro. Then when the clones are large enough to take over the task, you can dispose of your dirt moms or....FLOWER THEM!

Hello there..i use 5 gallon containers for my mothers and have no problems..i usally make a new mom every 4 moths or so as they tend to get GIANT..but they will get a little rootbound but not to worry since you growing vegatation and not flowers..you could allways repot in to larger containers but you dont really have to.. i would not trim the roots as they are very delicate and any cuts or breaks in the root system could invite root pathogens and root rot to set in...but some people do as in banzai and such..

take care

I use seven gallon containers for my mom and do a root rim every year if it looks like she needs it or not. Its just good practice.
