punishment for rape should be on par with murder, in both instances you are taking something from someone that they can never get back. but i completely agree with the mothers version of Hammurabi's code

I kind of agree with you there rkrone.
I think that the punishment for rape should be a bit higher than murder though (obviously depending on the circumstances). With murder there are circumstances where there is an excuse for murder, or reasons why the murder is slightly more acceptable, but with rape there is never an excuse. Murder victims may suffer pain, but physical pain and it's over fairly quickly. They may also have deserved to be murdered, or have done something to provoke the murder, but rape (in my opinion) is different.
Rape is a crime people commit either because they are control freaks, they are complete perverts that don't respect women and think of them as people just for men to have sex with (although men have been raped before too) or they are just plain sick in the head. Murder can be commited in self defence, but rape is commited with complete disregard for the victim for good reason.
Rape victims are often terrifyed for life, are scared to leave their house alone, break down crying because of flashbacks and are generally humiliated and are never the same person afterwards. They become emotional and are under emotional stress for their whole life, making life torture some of the time. Rape basically is murder in many cases, the victims lives destroyed, except they have to live the rest of their lives with great emotional pain.
That's why I think rape is worse than murder in many cases, not all cases, but most.

Rapists should be put in jail cells with the violent criminals that enjoy raping other inmates. They stay in jail until someone kills them. Plus they have to always have a sign that announces to everyone that they rape children.
Of course this will never happen. You'd have to smoke a joint or grow a plant to get treatment like that. I swear our government actually wants pedophilia going on, i hear horror stories all the time about repeat offenders working and living around children. How can this happen? Its so stupid I can only think its done on purpose.

kizzattack the reason the penalties are the way they are is i think those scum would just kill the woman after raping her if the penalties were worse for rape...

Sounds like with the exception of the varying degrees of violence we are all feeling the same way. I'm really impressed with some of the replies too, some really well thought out ones in here. Shows how different people see things differently. People have made really good points in a thread people feel strongly about and there's been no infighting.

There's a reason the law is set in place. No, it isn't always fair. The police don't have hidden cameras in every nook and cranny in your house, so you can't blame them for not discovering every rape. Those of you who expect that, and at the same time speak out against FLIR sensors, are not being reasonable IMO.
If you think sex offenders should be shot execution style or castrated, I'd fear for you the day potsmokers get their index finger chopped for holding a joint.
