mother/seedling lighting

Hey guys i got another newbie question regarding lighting recommendations for keeping 2-3 mothers and have some room for starting seedlings/rooting clones. I am looking for flouros since i hear thats whats best/ cheapest for sustaining plants in early veg. After early veg i have a 1000w luma with a horti blue bulb which i then switch to a horti super hps bulb for flower..so i kind of would like flouros for energy reasons.
I have done some reading and it looks like some T5's would do the trick for me, but I am looking for any tips on what specific models and how many bulbs of what length i should use to have adequate lighting for 2-3 moms in soil. My main system is actually a bio bucket system which i had some unfortunate results my first go around due to damping off i think. ((WHat happened what i left my seedlings ak48/ GHS cheese under some plastic wrap when they sprouted since my humidity reading was reading LOW. I also think i had inadequate amounts of dissolved oxygen since once i added 8 air stones to the system they seemed to do slightly better until all but one (the ak48) died. Each seedling(except the one ak) started developing brown spots on the leaves and the trunks darkened up to a purple almost. Eventually each leaf dried up badly like a leaf in autumn. All but one survived--and this one has a green stem and not purple, and when i transplanted i didn't put it as submerged (i know stupid mistake) in the water as i did with the other ones.))
I just ordered some Chemdog IBL from res and some snow white fems from nirvana and plan on doing these plants justice this second time around. I was thinking of starting them under these flouros i have yet to get..then eventually to the bio bucket system. At the seedling stage is 24 hour lighting under flouro best or is the standard 18/6? if i am not mistaken there are 2 camps on this question. I am putting these seeds in A Ok grodan cubes then on top of a heated tray. This time around there will be no coverings of any sort and will wait until the cube is completely rooted before putting in the buckets and hopefully i will be good to go :dance013: .
Lastly, for smell reasons (i hear that chemdog ibl is just out of this world) i have a blue air 6" ozone generator and a can 33 going through a 400+ cfm (i forget the exact cfm) vortex. Is this going to be enough to deal with the STANK of the chemdog? Any recommendations on this would also be appreciated.

THanks for your time :dance013:

whoa there man, lol, my eyes hurt reading this, maybe you could break it up a little and give each of your questions it's own paragraph.

anyway, below are a couple pics of my mother box that i built under a different name and where i'm using a 2ft T5 fixture with 4x 24watt bulbs.

i've been using this for a couple years now with more growth than i can use and, when full, i can keep 21 mothers in this box.

frankly though, i'd recommend PL-L's as a superior alternative, think T5's, but folded in half so twice the power in the same physical space. (these are both 55watters and the same physical size as my 24watt T5 bulbs)

here is a link to the PL-L club where you can find a comprehensive discussion with links to suppliers and wiring diagrams and such.

hope this helps, SOG

thanks for the info man. That is something i definitely want to look into probably when i upgrade my system as a whole my next go around. I know from what i have read more lumens = best for your plants.

you're welcome man, i'm just tryin' to give back a little.

anyway, if you're on a budget you can use a bathroom vanity light that has multiple bulbs, you can find them in 3 bulb, 4 bulb, 5 bulb and 6 bulb configurations and if you then add Y splitters to each socket you can double the number of bulbs per fixture, for example, my vanity fixtures have 4 sockets, 4 splitters and 8 bulbs, mostly 23watters and 26watters, the most common, cheapest CFL bulbs you can find. ...i'd post up a couple pics to illustrate but my bandwidth really sucks today. (check my gallerys, the pics are in 'misc')

also, from what you wrote in your first posting it appears you are relatively new to cannabis cultivation and if that's true i'd strongly recommend you buy yourself a decent book on the subject, Jorge Cervantes book, 'Medical Marijuana' is an excellent addition to your library and will give you a basic understanding of most of what you need to know to make this work.

i'd also suggest you stick with soil growing until you have a bit of experience as dirt is much more forgiving than hydroponics, you can lose an entire crop in a matter of hours if a pump fails and you don't notice it.

i popped my first seed 4 years ago and i played with hydro for about a year but it was a pain in the ass needing almost constant attention, with dirt my plants are able to survive the neglectful treatment they recieve from me, in my garden, only the strong survive, lol.

anyway, if you are determined to pursue hydroponics i'd strongly recommend that you read SuperPedro's thread as he is a master. (he grows organically with a bio-filter i believe so maybe similar to what you have attempted?)

hope this helps, SOG

it seems my bandwidth has widened enough to add a pic so here is a shot of the light i described with splitters in place. ...btw, this fixture and ones like it can be had retail at Home Depot and Lowes and stores like it for about $15.00 - $20.00 and the splitters retail for about $2.00 each.

and do yourself a favor and look in your local phone-book for 'Builders Salvage', if you can find one you can get some terrific deals on light fixtures.

oh, and here is a link to one of SuperPedro's threads, believe me, he really knows his stuff

lol tell me about it. I am constantly checking ph trying to keep it at 5.6. I was about to abandon the bio buckets, but truth be told since i added the air stones the one plant that survived has started to really take off. I think also the beneficial bacteria are starting to really kick in since the sides of my resevoir are nice and slimy. I really cant look into the PLL's right now since this is something i want to pick up at my local shop unfortunately. But like i said next go around will be when i really try to get my atmosphere real dialed in.
In my case i think i also killed em with love (aka humidity/water) since i feared the roots drying out. Soon after that i left a soaked starter cube under the MH and it stayed moist for MUCH longer than i thought it would. This is going to be a good thing to know when the chemdogs and snow whites come in.

If your curious my system is pretty much modelled exactly like this one except i have separate lines bringing oxygenated water in

yeah, lol, truth be told, i went back to soil when i discovered DrBudGreenGenes and his threads about 3 years ago and now i'm fully committed to organic soil growing.

that's not to say i won't ever do hydro again, just that i'm still mastering organic soil and tea making so that's my priority at the moment, lol.

anyway, good luck in your endeavors, just don't get discouraged or too cocky, either can lead to failure.

peace, and stay safe, SOG
