Mother, From Seed or Clone??

Big Deal

Member
Does anyone think theres an advantage/disadvantage to using a seedling opposed to a clone for a potential mother plant.

My guess is a seedling would be ideal because of the vigor they express.
The only disadvantage of a clone mother I can see, would be a longer wait to sample the "new" strain. I would like other thoughts on the subject.
thanks,

The deal with the seed is you dont know what the mother is like in flower. If you take a clone and then flower the plant you will know how it grows and smokes.....

Hows that all that different from:

If you take a plant and then flower a clone you will know how it grows and smokes..... EXCEPT, more space (larger plants) in veg cycle longer, instead of more space used in flower cycle.

That doesn't seem all that bad...Depending on your set up, that could be more of an advantage

the original plant from seed is always the most vigorous most yielding in my experience..but clones do have the potential it just takes veg time.back too the question your going to take clones off that mother from seed so who cares its all the same a mother is a mother(clone factory)and it doesent matter...just my .02 magic

There isnt a difference. But that wasnt your question. By making a seedling the mother, you would not know what the batch of clones would be until they were done flowering....

for a good symetrical bonsai, a seed is better, as you don't get the lower stepped grow pattern (edit: for the lower branches).

the seedling also has a main tap root that the clone won't have. if that makes a difference to you. the top side never seemed to matter in this respect though.

i guess it depends what your going for. if your trying to find a mother plant go from seed so you have a selection of different phenotypes to pick from. but if you just need a good mother for new clones, go with a clone since it would be a hell of a lot quicker and you know the end result.
