Most Presidential Candidates support MMJ

MPP Update said:
At least 10 of the 18 Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are now on the record in favor of ending the DEA's raids on medical marijuana and/or the federal government's prohibition on medical marijuana.

Please visit our Web site to read about all 18 of these candidates' positions, and to make a donation to MPP's work on the presidential campaign trail in New Hampshire.

Thanks to MPP's work, seven candidates have publicly pledged to end the DEA's raids in states where medical marijuana is legal — Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC), Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM), and former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R-WI).

In addition, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) has voted in favor of medical marijuana legislation on the House floor four out of four times, former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-AK) said on C-SPAN, "That one is real simple. I would legalize marijuana," and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said, "I will let states decide that issue."

That's right: Even Sen. McCain, when given the opportunity to comment on medical marijuana publicly, said something positive, not negative.

Please donate to MPP today so that we may continue pressuring the presidential candidates to take stronger, even more positive positions.

It has been only two months since MPP began lobbying the presidential candidates to take strong, public, positive positions on medical marijuana during the presidential primary race in New Hampshire, which is the first state to hold a primary (on January 22, 2008).

One particular success story involves Sen. Edwards. In 2003, we trailed him around the state, relentlessly questioning him about medical marijuana access. At the time, Sen. Edwards insisted it would be "irresponsible" to end the DEA's raids on sick and dying people. Now, four years later, his position has changed from vowing to continue the raids to vowing to end them.

Will you please make a donation today to help MPP increase the profile of marijuana policy reform in the 2008 presidential race?

A majority of the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates are supportive of medical marijuana access. Our favorite quote so far is from former Gov. Thompson, who told MPP's Stuart Cooper in Manchester, "No, they should not be arrested. They should not be arrested. They should not be arrested. I would do away with the DEA raids!"

And this doesn't even count the support that other candidates, including every Libertarian Party candidate, as well as potential candidate Ralph Nader, have expressed for ending marijuana prohibition entirely.

Of the two Democratic candidates I haven't yet mentioned, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) is studying the issue, and we haven't yet spoken with Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) this year, although he told me personally in the fall of 2004 that he supports medical marijuana.

Of the six remaining Republican candidates, they're all bad so far, but we'll keep working on them: Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), former Gov. Jim Gilmore (R-VA), former Mayor Rudy Guiliani (New York City), former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR), Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), and former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA).

Again, you can read about the specifics of their comments by visiting our Web site.

And if you want to see medical marijuana become a prominent issue in the presidential campaign, please give now. As you can see, our work is paying off, and we need your help to keep it up.

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,

Better than having them lock you away in a hole for 15 years and take your illicit money and use it to put other people in holes

This was more about MMJ anyway :D

And had it been in the MMJ forum I wouldn't have considered such a dreadfully honest reply lol!

I agree with you in spirit NT, but read this with an eye to spin. This peckerwoods wants to take credit for changing candidates minds, when his group has done no such thing. Every poll in every state says that citizens support MMJ, that is why some candidates "support" it. I would love to see more real progress, but these lobbiest have very little to do with it. Keep swinging the bat man.

I read everything with an eye to spin :D

I don't think humans can avoid it :biglaugh:

However, I do know that I see actual action from the MPP. They've setup lobbying groups in almost every state in which MMJ laws were passed. What I find interesting is that they don't setup thier own groups, per se, but support local groups with funds and prepared materials. They do break out the big mouthpieces for fund raising and media events, which, while on the surface seems self-serving, can actually be a big boon to the local groups, who very rarely have professional lobbyists in their corner.

Plus, they do harass candidates into and lawmakers into actually making a definitive statement. Hell, I'd support them just for harassing some of the idiots we have in our assemblies :biglaugh:

So, of course this is spun to generate funds (and that is stated clearly in the message), I agree. I do find it rather forthcoming that you can opt out of receiving the fund raising rhetoric and just get the info, if you like.

All in all, while no lobbying group will ever be perfect, I do find MPP to be better than the other choices. If nothing else, it's worth a visit to the site to draw your own conclusions.

Besides, I like their spin better than the spin the media puts on MJ :D

I swear to God Texas needs to be banned from entering people into the presidential run...nothing good ever comes from it.

Seriously though it doesn't surprise me that politicians are supporting it, or at least saying they do. The majority of people acknowledge marijuana's medicinal properties, and if it helps a terminally ill patient why throw them in jail? Unlike Bush most would be presidents actually care about the populations support, and thus try and back the majority.

Mr. Nevermind

no offense but.... big fucking deal. Candidates support anything if it will get them elected . THe problem is once elected they do whatever they feel is right regardless of the will of the people, if they even do anything about it at all. When is the last time a candidate talked about an issue and did something about it?

Look at immigration, i been hearing that it will be solved every 4 years and 4 years later nothing is done. Look at social security, everyone talks about doing something about it but what have they actually done? Look at mid east, all of them claim they want to help make a peaceful solution to the middle east, but they dont do shit about it and if they do its the opposite of what they said they would ( Bush ran on not using army for nation building and look what happened) when they wanted your vote. Look at our energy policy, they all talk about being energy independent but havent done shit about it.

Politics is an art of words with hardly any action behind those words. They use the same issues to get elected but never work on those issues. If they did solve those issues then they wouldnt have anything to talk about to get elected again. So its best for politicians to give a half ass effort and blame their failure on someone else so they have that issue to stir up their base 4 years later.

To think our government will actually do something that the majority of the people want is just silly. In democracy it should work that way but we really dont have a democracy. This is the same government that knows that an overwhelming majority of the peopel want our troops home and refuse to listen and let 330 die in the best 3 months. If they dont give a fuck about the troops do you really think they will give a fuck about MJ users?

Our government is full of shit and does what makes them money, not what is right or wrong. And we only have ourselves to blame. We vote the fuckers in and never hold them accountable.

I highly doubt Kucinich, Gravel, and Paul are yanking our collective chains, though.
What can be said for a few can't be said for the rest....

From any actual past history on the matter only Bill Richardson can be trusted. It would take a time machine to see what the rest would really do.
