Mites on cuts, best way to kill them before rooting?

G

Guest

I received some nice cuts from a friend of mine but he warned me there might be some mites on them. He found this out after he sent the package.

My question is, what is the best way to "wipe the cuts" clean of the mites so that they're safe to root w/ the rest?

Or put them in stasis (Fridge) a couple days....then root them....if you try stasis make sure you let the cuttings acclimate a day or so before trying to root

I mix some neem in a 3 gallon bucket with 70F water. I then dunk all my clones in it. This protects me from mites and powdery mildew. 2 days later I dunk them in plain water. 4 days later I dunk them in sm90 solution in the bucket. The whole time they are set up in a little area 2X2 in my garage for quarantine. I learned this the hardway last time when I brought home a clone with powdery mildew that wiped out half my mothers and weakend whats left. I keep them in quarantine for at least 14 days to make sure I have no problems. Im super paranoid about introducing anything into the main garden. Im still learning

A dip of Avid or Floramite will get rid of them for sure...but I'm sure if you had any laying around you would have already used it.

Google em

IME they are the only way to make sure the mites are gone. I've tried neem, insecticidal soaps, pyrethrum, and NPS...Avid killed em all after a single spraying where the others only slowed em down.

They're both controlled pesticides, but you can find them at alot of places if you look hard enough.

Keep them in the fridge for a week, very humid, almost wet. Dip them in insecticide before going in and going out of the fridge. It's important that you use an insecticide that kills eggs, larvae and adults, and one that you haven't used continually before on the same mite population. Dicofol will do, and Avid, as the Sandman said. Neem oil won't cut it. It is composed of a complex mixture of biologically active compounds, Azidirachtin being the most active of these. It doesn't actually kill the mites, it acts as an insect growth regulator (IGR) preventing exoskeleton development and impeding the molting process. Since neem oil doesn't kill, but makes the overall mite population more fragile (for instance, more vulnerable to the plant's own defense systems), it's a good biological method to keep a mite population in check. But you don't want a single mite to survive on these clones, do you?
When rooting, keep it as humid as possible. I use a fogger to mist them continuously.

rare but when ive needed to spray mites on clones i use a product called Kill-a-mite (abermectin). Sprayed on mums or before cloning then again as clones root while still in the crib. Kills all mites in seconds and wont harm plants like scaria fly treatments do..

Thanks for all of the input guys... these are your average sized cuttings I received in the mail.

I just want to make sure they're nice n safe before letting them get around anything else.

Abemectin is Avid...!

Abemectin is Avid...!

Jayson,

Listen to Rosy cheeks - they're right on it!

Sounds like 'Kill-a-Mite' is another form of Avid - very effective if obtainable. Check the grow stores, most have been cleaned out of it by the Feds, but there are still a few that will sell little vials of Avid for a small fortune - get it! If cannot find, I've heard from many that Floramite (Soy Oil) is the next best 'killer'.

My program is two sprays of Avid one week apart on all new stock, and then a once-every-5-days spray of Einstein Oil (NEEM) that keeps it all under control, as RosyCheeks points out... by the end of the run, you're pretty much organic and good to go!

If you can get your hands on some Avid, then great. When you have cuttings that are infested, you can dip them in the Avid for an overall coating where nothing escapes... problem is Avid does NOT KILLL EGGS, and there will be many. An Avid dipping is your FIRST step, but does not mean you are yet done with controlling them.

Best,

Wildheart

You know, I've seen that mentioned alot...but it always takes out any mites I have with a single spraying...there's still eggs on the undersides, but they NEVER hatch even at 90f & 45%RH - you think that's just the residual effect of the Avid?

hey wildheart.

Ive been using this kill a mite for about 12 months has removed all my mite problems in all rooms seems to upset other bugs too. Isnt as toxic as the last spray i was using "lorsban" a comonly use multi bug spray but some mites are imune. Combined with it being so toxic in concentrate i had to find something better..

If anyone is interested this is the company that makes kill a mite, scaria sprays all sorts of PGRs and more. Probally closer to me than you but could suprise me and already be sold in the US.

Nulifetech bug spray to the bottom of page.

lol...Kila-mite is a mixture of Avermectin B1a (95%W/W) and Avermectin B1b (5%W/W) - aka Avid..but at a weaker concentration than Avid. Avid is used at 1/2ml per gallon - kilamite is 1ml/liter.

How much did it cost you per 100ml bottle?

cost me $8 aussi $$ = around $6 maby $7 US .Buying direct from a grow shop that sells Nulife products but kill a mite can be found at most grow shops for about $10 to $12 per 100ml.

Apparently a new wave of mite killers so mites are not yet imune or have resistance against.. I was using lorsban never killed all mites think it was the green or red ones that didnt die..

On bottle it says

Active constituent: 18g/litre Abamectin.
Solvent: 481g/litre Hydrcarbon
Co solvent: 100g/litre N-Methyl=2-pyrrolidone

Group 6A insecticide.

After using kill a mite im going to scrap the lorsban totally and buy nulifes scaria fly spray that one is abit more expensive but only a few $s.
