Mini split question

So I am in the process of setting up two flower rooms. Each room will have 6K watts unvented running on a flip flop off my 30amp 220v dryer outlet. I have an extra 20 amp breaker that I want to use for a 36,000 btu dual zone(18k + 18k)mini split. What I wanted to know is if that dual zone mini split could push 30k btu to whichever room has lights on? Leaving 6k btu for the lights off room. Is it as simple as getting two 30k btu air handlers for each room? I want to keep a low profile in my new house rental since I have a pool guy and landscaper who come once a week. I only want to use one compressor outside. Thanks for any info.

Are you talking about putting an 18k btu head in each room or both heads in one room and circulate the air between the two rooms?
 
I'm talkin bout putting one 30k btu air handler in EACH room. Allowing the majority of the cooling to go to the room with lights on.

I'm still a bit confused but Ill try to answer your question.
If you have dual 18k btu heads the each head will only put out 18k btu. Or am I still not understanding your question?
 
Lemme try and break it down. Each room will have 6k unvented. Flip flop. So when room A has lights on for 12 hours, it will need 27k btu to cool it. And since room B, will be lights off for those same 12 hours it will only need a minimal amount of btu to cool it. So what I am wondering is if I can have a single 36k btu compressor connected to two 36k btu air handlers, one in each room? Allowing for the majority of btu's to cool whichever room has lights on.

Ah ok, I see what your getting at.
Normally when you buy a dual tri or quad head mini split the total sum of the heads will equal the size of the compressor.
However, I don't see why you couldn't do it the way you're asking. If the rooms need more cooling power than the compressor can provide then you'll just be under cooled.
Not sure if the compressor would sense an overload and shut down if both rooms called for more cooling than the compressor is rated for.

Thanks I figured if I can flip flop the lights, why not the mini split. Although its more like just allowing more cooling to go where it needs to go. Normally 27k btu will handle 6 unvented lights. So that should leave 9k btu to cool the lights off room.

Yep, that's what I thought too, no problem right??
Then in the middle of the following summer the compressor was dead, it was running, but on one was home..

Seems you cannot run compressors at max capacity 24hrs a day..
The HVAC dude said you need to run no more than 80% capacity and then it's still going to fail prematurely, it'll just last a little longer...

Then the fucking compressor's cost is like 75% of the cost of the whole unit itself... :whee:


Just my experience with the same thought process... lol :tiphat:
